“Getting lost in the music” is given entirely new meaning at the You Are Here Festival, a.k.a the maze, a.k.a Trouble Maze. Returning to New York City this week, the music fest is only one that we know of that takes place in a giant, life-sized maze. Fest goers wander through a labyrinthine construction and encounter performances and art installations along the way. This edition, which runs June 30-July 4 at Knockdown Center, finds Unstoppable Death Machines, Prefuse 73, Arto Lindsay, Suicide Year, and more lurking within the a-maze-ing, winding sculpture.

Saxophonist Sam Hillmer and sculptor Laura Paris, a.k.a. Trouble, conceived of the You Are Here Festival back in 2007 and have since produced it in New York City every few years. In 2009, it took place at Death By Audio and featured Ty Segall, Calvin Johnson, The Coat Hangers, Pterodactyl, Zs, Mick Barr, Alexis Gideon, and more. It returned in 2012 to inhabit Secret Project Robot where it hosted the likes of Amen Dunes, Xeno and Oaklander, Ice Choir, Novella, and C. Spencer Yeh. Last year, it was part of the Select Art Fair, and saw a maze constructed on the roof of the old Dia art space. Among the performers were Lee Ranaldo, Jungle Pussy, James Chance, Miho Hatori and PC Worship. The fest has also traveled to other cities around the world with showcases recently popping up in Berlin and Chicago.

As for the incarnation of the fest that kicks off this Thursday, the maze structure promises to be larger than previous installations, and in addition to the performances is accompanied by light, projections, sound, and sculpture. Over its 5-day run, the festival plays host to 7 different programs, each having a different co-presenter.
