Wolf Parade Played ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’, Final Show of Bowery Ballroom Residency Tonight (Night 3 Recap)
After a 5-year hiatus, Wolf Parade have returned in style. To coincide with a 5-night residency at Bowery Ballroom that finishes up tonight, the band released a new 4-track EP earlier this week, and performed a medley of songs off it last night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. We caught night 3 of the band’s Bowery stand and it was exhilarating. Below, you’ll find photos, videos, and the setlist from the show, as well as a video of their Late Show appearance.
With already two reunion shows at Bowery under their belts, Wolf Parade (Spencer Krug, Dan Boeckner, Arlen Thompson, and Dante DeCaro) took to the stage Thursday night already in a groove. The indie rockers got things underway with the lead track off of their acclaimed first album Apologies to the Queen Mary. From there they covered a lot of ground, playing a mix of tunes off all of their older LPs (Apologies, At Mount Zoomer, Expo 86), as well as the new EP. The set list was written in their own personal cryptic shorthand with songs having nicknames like “Beyonce” and “Costello.” Of all the bandmates, Boeckner seemed the most in awe of all the Wolf Parade love that was emanating from the audience.
Throughout the set, Krug and Boeckner bantered about between songs. They particularly enjoyed making fun of the evening’s opening act The Snails, who performed in costume. But clearly, the Baltimore band, which features members of Future Islands, Small Sur, Wing Dam, Nuclear Power Pants, and Showbiz, wasn’t offended by their remarks, as the group’s saxophonist joined Wolf Parade for two songs.
In addition to the band’s new self-released EP, also out now via Sub Pop on 3xLP/DL is Apologies to the Queen Mary: Deluxe Edition, a reissue of their seminal record. It features the original album, now as a double LP, along with the group’s pre-Sub Pop, self-titled EPs. You can purchase a copy of the reissue at Sub Pop Mega Mart, Wolf Parade.com, Amazon, and Bandcamp.
After tonight’s final show of the Bowery run, the group head to Toronto for a string of gigs, but then return to play a free concert at the Northside Festival on June 9. You can RSVP for that show here. A complete list of all their upcoming dates can be found below.
