Wilco Releasing Expanded, Super-Duper Deluxe, Remastered 5-LP Reissue of ‘Summerteeth’
Jeff Tweedy dropped some fantastic Wilco news on clients of The Tweedy Show this evening. The band are releasing an expanded, super-duper deluxe reissue of their third studio album, Summerteeth, on November 6, 2020. Nothing is going to stand in their way of delivering fans a 5-LP (or 4-CD) set containing a remastered version of the original along with 24 previously unreleased tracks. The super-sized edition of Summerteeth is available for pre-order. Coupled with the announcement the band have shared a track, “Summer Teeth (Slow Rhodes Edition).”
The band teased something was coming via social media earlier in the day. They posted a message on Twitter urging Wilco enthusiasts to sign up for their mailing list for updates. They closed their note with a subtle “wink wink.”
Jeff’s announcement came near the start of The Tweedy Show‘s Tuesday night episode, which found the family broadcasting from the front porch of their cabin in Michigan. While frogs, crickets, and miscellaneous wildlife trilled, Jeff asked viewers, “Has anybody heard the record Summerteeth?” He promptly followed up with, “Nobody likes that record.” Reading from notes, he went on to explain that the deluxe expanded Summerteeth would be available as a 5 LP vinyl set or as 4 CDs. The vinyl set will include a live album of the band performing at Tower Records in Chicago on March 11, 1999, while the CD set features a recording of their November 1, 1999, set at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, CO. The package is also being released digitally.
Bob Ludwig, who mastered the original hour-long album, was charged with remastering for the new edition. The record includes 24 previously unreleased outtakes and demos, some of which were on cassette tapes found in a box Jeff had stashed at The Loft. Featured are recordings of Jeff and Jay Bennett working out songs, as well as studio demos, and Jeff’s musings.
Released on March 9, 1999, Summerteeth celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2019. The album includes such notable tracks as “A Shot in the Arm,” “How to Fight Loneliness,” “I’m Always in Love,” and “Via Chicago.” Jeff has said that literature he was reading at the time heavily influenced his songwriting on the record.
Wilco looked very different back in 1999 when Summerteeth came out. Playing with Jeff were Leroy Bach on piano, Ken Coomer on drums, Jay Bennett, and John Stirratt, who, besides Jeff, is the only other member still with the group. Jay, famously kicked out of the band during the making of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, sadly passed away in 2009.
In related news, Jeff has a new book on the way, How to Write One Song. Dropping October 13, 2020, it’s available for pre-order here. He also wrote the foreword for Gregory Crewdson’s new limited-edition photography book, An Eclipse of Moths. It comes out this month. You can read more about that here.
The Tweedy Show, the Covid-19 era Instagram Live show that stars Jeff and his family, is still running. They have, however, cut back on the frequency. For more info on the show, go here, and for showtimes, follow Susie Tweedy on Instagram.
You can pre-order the deluxe Summerteeth reissue here. Pre-orders include an instant download of “Summer Teeth (Slow Rhodes Edition),” which you can listen to now on Spotify. The band have also come up with some cool new merch to go along with the record. You can watch Jeff’s announcement of the reissue below. It starts around 6 minutes into the video.
