Watch Father John Misty’s Full Set at We Love Green, ‘God’s Favorite Customer’ Out Now, Tour Continues
Father John Misty’s tour in support of his new album, God’s Favorite Customer, made a stop in Paris today at We Love Green Festival. Thanks to European culture channel ARTE, a video of the set is available online for fans viewing pleasure. You can watch the intoxicating, nearly hour-long set below as well as check out the set list.
The eco-friendly We Love Green, which launched in 2011, takes place in a park in Paris’ 12th arrondissement and bills itself as having “an eclectic program that bridges indie and electro.” In recent years, the festival has attracted over 45,000 fest goers and has featured acts such as LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, PJ Harvey, AIR, Christine and the Queens, Lorde, Anderson.Paak, Nicolas Jaar and Seu Jorge.
Father John Misty was among Sunday’s lineup at the 2018 We Love Green Festival. He performed on La Prairie stage, where Björk was to appear later in the day. During his set, he joked that he now knew what bored Björk fans look like, obviously feeling that many in the audience were just there to get a good spot for her show. At one point, in the middle of “Pure Comedy”, he broke from the song and made an appeal to the Björk lovers. He explained that he too was a Björk fan, and that “Pure Comedy” was inspired by a book that Björk had recommended, Leonard Shlain’s The Alphabet Versus the Goddess. He then went on to say that a year after reading the book, he “more or less, full-scaled plagiarized it” into “Pure Comedy.”
For his set, FJM donned rose-colored glasses and was accompanied by a nine-piece band that included a three-piece winds section. He performed a medley of songs from all of his albums, with the center of the set focusing on four tunes off the new record, God’s Favorite Customer. And, while he performed in daylight, he still had a light show and visuals projected behind him. Familiar were illustrations from his Pure Comedy tour, and added into the mix were images created for the new songs, including a QVC-like ad to buy the new record which flashed during “Mr. Tillman.”
Father John Misty’s tour in support of God’s Favorite Customer continues through November, with his closest shows to New York City being Mountain Jam on June 17 and Panorama Music & Arts Festival on July 27. His touring band consists of Dan Bailey on drums, Kyle Flynn on keyboards, Eli Thomson on bass, Chris Dixie Darley and David Vandervelde on guitar, John Titterington on Piano, and Kelly Pratt on horns.
God’s Favorite Customer, Father John Misty’s fourth LP, finds the troubadour again making a case for why he is one of the greatest singer-songwriters of our time. The new album is out now worldwide via Sub Pop, with the exception of Europe where its available through Bella Union (buy it here). It was produced by Josh Tillman (aka Father John Misty) and written mostly during time spent in New York between Summer 2016 and Winter 2017. Recording duties were split between Dave Cerminara, Jonathan Rado (Foxygen), who also played bass and piano on songs, and Trevor Spencer, seen here talking about the gear used during FJM’s Pure Comedy tour. You can stream the album in full here.
In addition to watching his We Love Green set below, you can also check out the spellbinding Chris Hopewell-directed stop-motion animation video for God’s Favorite Customer track “Please Don’t Die”. Hopewell is also responsible for the video for FJM’s “Things It Would Have Been Helpful to Know Before the Revolution”, and Radiohead’s “Burn the Witch”.
