‘Uncut Gems: Extended Edition’ in Theaters, Includes Safdies-Sandler Q&A Experience, Plus, Get Your ‘Uncut Gems’ T-Shirts
We’ve talked about the ways Parasite has tried to siphon off our money. Uncut Gems is proving even more relentless. We’re becoming bona fide Uncut Gems addicts. A24, the film’s distributor, keeps luring us back in with new merchandise and theatrical gimmicks. Just in time for the Film Independent Spirit Awards ceremony on Saturday, Uncut Gems: Extended Edition is arriving in theaters with a Q&A experience. Plus, there are Uncut Gems t-shirts to be had. We may need to start attending UGA (Uncut Gemsaholics Anonymous) meetings.
Directed by Josh and Benny Safdie, Uncut Gems stars Adam Sandler as Howie Ratner, a New York City Diamond District jeweler with a serious gambling problem. Just when you think Howie might get out from under, things go south. The thriller is a nail-biter, a stomach-churner, and a head-spinner.
While Uncut Gems didn’t score any Oscar nominations, the film is up for several Film Independent Spirit Awards. These awards will be handed out in a ceremony that goes down in Los Angeles this weekend, the day before the Oscars. Uncut Gems is up for Best Feature, Best Editing, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Male Lead for Sandler’s performance.
Uncut Gems recently became available on Netflix in basically every market in the world except the U.S., where it is still playing in theaters. A few weeks ago, to drum up business for the film’s theatrical run, the Safdies released Goldman v Silverman, a short film shot on 35mm to screen in theaters along with 35mm prints of the film. That seemed to cause some excitement.
Now, the Safdies and A24’s latest brainstorm to get people to theaters is Uncut Gems: Extended Edition. This version of the film includes a Punk’d-style, hidden-camera Q&A with Sandler. The magnanimous brother duo set up cameras inside Mel’s Drive-in in Los Angeles and invited Sandler to meet them there. The unsuspecting actor pulls up, and the interrogation begins. Special guests, like Jason Bateman, also drop by to take part. Uncut Gems One-of-a-Kind Q&A Experience will screen exclusively in theaters as part of Uncut Gems: Extended Edition starting this weekend. You can watch the teaser below.
Besides the Q&A experience, A24 is dropping new merch. Unfortunately, the KMH Furby pendants* came and went. However, starting today, two t-shirts are going on sale. One features Howie’s mug on the front, while the other showcases several key members of the cast. The shirts will be available at the A24 store, along with the Uncut Gems Winning Bet Ball, Gems Uncut Zine by Josh and Benny Safdie, and the KMH Diamond Grading Chart.
To find out where Uncut Gems: Extended Edition is playing, visit the film’s website. There are several locations in New York City. *UPDATE 2/6: Alamo Drafthouse is giving away a KMH Furby Pendant (value $250) to one lucky guest at a screening of the extended edition. The new version is screening at Alamo Drafthouse theaters in Austin, Denver, El Paso, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Lubbock, New York City (Brooklyn), Omaha, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Francisco, and Springfield.
