Tribeca TV Festival Returns Next Month with ‘Dickinson,’ ‘Transparent’ Finale, ‘Evil,’ James Spader & More
What do Hailee Steinfeld, Steven Soderbergh, Forest Whitaker, Mark Duplass, Hasan Minhaj, and Pam Grier all have in common? They’ll all be at the 2019 Tribeca TV Festival. Returning for its third year, the must-see tv event of the fall season takes place September 12-15, 2019 at the Regal Cinemas Battery Park in New York City. This year’s lineup is absolutely binge worthy. Offerings include the highly anticipated world premieres of Apple TV+’s Dickinson and The CW’s Katy Keene, CBS’s psychological thriller Evil, a signature Tribeca Talk with James Spader, and a 25th Anniversary celebration for Friends. Tickets for these and more are on sale now.
The Tribeca TV Festival, a spinoff of the Tribeca Film Festival, launched as a stand-alone event in 2017. Over the last two years, the fest has hosted several noteworthy events. Among them a surprise unveiling of Will & Grace‘s reboot, the premiere of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown Season 12, a screening of National Geographic’s docudrama Valley of the Boom, a celebration of the 200th episode of Shark Tank, and a conversation between Tracey Ullman and Meryl Streep.
The 2019 edition is shaping up to be the most ambitious yet. The lineup reflects the ever-changing TV landscape and includes shows from ABC, CBS, BET+, Amazon Prime Video, HBO, Showtime, Apple+, EPIX, AMC, STARZ, Hulu, Freeform and the CW. From HBO is the world premiere of
Season 3 of Mark and Jay Duplass’s late night anthology series Room 104. Also celebrating the world premiere of its third season is Amazon Prime’s legal drama Goliath, which stars Billy Bob Thornton, Amy Brenneman and Dennis Quaid, all of whom will be in attendance. And, ABC is sending in Bless This Mess. The comedy, which stars Lake Bell and Dax Shepard, is celebrating its second season.
Docuseries and shows based on true stories are on the rise. The festival presents several series that fall in this camp. From STARZ is Leavenworth, a new true-crime doc series about the military justice system executive produced by Steven Soderbergh, David Check and Paul Pawlowski. EPIX brings Godfather of Harlem, a historical crime drama from the creators of Narcos that stars Forest Whitaker and Vincent D’Onofrio (see the trailer below). And, Questlove’s Hip Hop: The Songs That Shook America, which is executive produced by Alex Gibney, is also screening.
The festival’s centerpiece, Dickinson, is a 19th century period comedy about Emily Dickinson. Haliee Steinfeld is cast as the rebellious young poet and Jane Krakowski (30 Rock) also stars. The trailer for the series is below.
Another screening event that’s on our radar is the sneak preview of Freeform’s Party of Five. The popular 90s series has been reimagined as a story for our times. Five children find themselves on their own after their parents are suddenly deported back to Mexico.
The closing night of the fest features Transparent‘s “Musical Finale.” It should be a fitting send off for the Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning Amazon Prime series. Jill Soloway and Faith Soloway will both be on hand for a post-screening conversation.
