Tribeca 2018: ‘To Dust’, ‘United Skates’, ‘Momentum Generation’ & More Come out on Top in Audience Awards
The votes have been tallied and the winners of the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival Audience Awards have been announced. Taking home top honors in the narrative category is To Dust, written and directed by Shawn Snyder. As for the documentaries, United Skates, directed by Dyana Winkler and Tina Brown, rose to the top. In addition to each winning $10,000, both films will screen again on Sunday.
If for any reason these films cannot fulfill their duties, runner-ups have been named. Ondi Timor’s biopic about Robert Mapplethorpe, Mapplethorpe, and Jeff Zimbalist and Michael Zimbalist’s surfing documentary Momentum Generation both scored second in their respective categories. Both of these films will also be screening on Sunday.
To Dust, which appeared in the fest’s Special Screenings section, is a dark buddy comedy about a grieving Hassidic Jew who looks to a biology professor (Matthew Broderick) for answers about death. The film has a history with Tribeca, as it received early support from the Tribeca Film Institute. The film’s director also walked off with the juried award for Best New Narrative Director.
United Skates examines African-American roller-rink culture. It is Dyana Winkler and Tina Brown’s first feature documentary.
All of the above mentioned films will screen on Sunday, April 29 at Cinépolis Chelsea. The schedule is as follows:
