‘The Ties that Bind’ to Have World Premiere at DOC NYC and Other Springsteen-Related News
It appears that DOC NYC is getting in on the Bruce Springsteen nostalgia trip. Today, the documentary festival announced that it will host the world premiere of The Ties that Bind, a film that looks at the making of Springsteen’s 1980 album The River. The documentary will screen at the SVA Theatre on Saturday, November 14 at 7:30pm and tickets are now on sale.
The Ties that Bind, which is directed by Thom Zimny (The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town), features an intimate interview with Springsteen about the writing and recording of the album and intersperses it with period concert footage and rare photos. Following its premiere at DOC NYC, the film will be released in December as part of the 35th anniversary The Ties That Bind: The River Collection box set, which contains unreleased material and never-before-seen video on 3 DVDs, along with a coffee table book.
In addition to all the hullabaloo around The River, Springsteen is also the subject of a new photography book by Barbara Pyle. Entitled Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band 1975, the book comes out later next month via Real Art Press and features intimate behind the scenes photographs taken by Pyle in 1975 just before the band broke out. Pyle captured the group during the recording, rehearsing and touring of Born To Run. The book will be the first time these photographs have been published. Pyle, along with photo archivist Dave Brolan and special guests, will be at Rizzoli Bookstore in New York City at 6pm tonight to discuss and celebrate the book. There will also be a pop-up preview of her photos of the band at Carmine Street Gallery on Friday night starting at 6pm (RSVP).
British band Hot Chip has also been showing Springsteen some love of late. At recent concerts, the group have been covering the Boss’ 1984 classic “Dancing in the Dark”. Earlier this month they released a video of their cover (see below), as well as a 4-track EP entitled Dancing in the Dark. The EP features their 7-minute version of the song.
Springsteen is still relevant and still loved after all these years. And, who knows, maybe he’ll make a cameo at the DOC NYC screening (fingers-crossed).
