‘Seinfeld’ now on Hulu, Ultimate Fan Experience Opens in New York

It’s D-Day for Hulu. The company ponied up a reported $180 million to buy the exclusive SVOD rights to Seinfeld from Sony Pictures Television earlier this year and starting today they’ll see if that gamble is going to pay off. All 180 episodes of the multi-award-winning show are now available to stream on the online video streaming service. Friends, which was on air from 1994-2004, proved it was still relevant and has been a big hit for Netflix. Will Seinfeld have the same attraction?  Based on the lines outside the pop-up shrine to the show which opened this morning in New York City, we going to say it’s quite likely.

A replica of Seinfeld’s TV apartment along with items from show are now on view in New York City’s Meatpacking District. We waited about 45 minutes to get into the space and then there was an additional line to actually enter the apartment. The space adjacent to the apartment is set up like an art gallery. On display are a random assortment of props from the show. Next to each is a screen where you can view the scene the prop appeared in. Among the items in this area are the actual New Jersey Devils jersey worn by David Puddy (Patrick Warburton) in the episode “The Face Painter” (season 6, episode 22), the booth Jerry always sat in at Monk’s Cafe, and the Tropic of Cancer library book from the episode “The Library” (season 3, episode 5). Visitors can also act out George’s photo shoot from the infamous episode “The Package” (season 8, episode 5), stage their own Airing of Grievances ceremony around the Festivus Pole, or step into an actual spotlight behind a microphone. While all this is going on, a Seinfeld soundtrack complete with laughter is being played in the background. Also, if you time it right you may be able to meet someone from the show. When we were there, the real Soup Nazi (Larry Thomas) was posing for photos with fans.

The replica apartment plunges you right into what it might have been like on set of the show. The cereal boxes are carefully arranged in the kitchen cabinet. Seinfeld’s bike is hanging next to the bathroom door. And the computer alcove is next to the window he always stuck his head out of. It’s a trip.

Upon departure, visitors are gifted with a small box of Junior Mints and a poster. There are four posters circulating each with a different Seinfeld quotable like: “This pretzel is making me thirsty,” and “No, I don’t have a square to spare. I can’t spare a square!”

The pop-up or ultimate Seinfeld fan experience, which is located at 451 West 14th Street, New York NY 10014, is open through Sunday, June 28, 10am-7pm daily. And if you can’t make it over, there’s always Greg Miller’s Jerry’s Place. Miller recreated Seinfeld’s apartment for virtual reality. You can find out about that project here.

Check out some photos from the Seinfeld exhibit below and head over to Hulu now if you want to catch up on all the episodes.
