New York City Ballet Art Series Returns for 2017 with Artist Santtu Mustonen
The home of the New York City Ballet will soon play host to a psychedelic site-specific animation thanks to Santtu Mustonen. The Finnish-born, Brooklyn-based artist has been tapped to create a large-scale video installation for the NYCB’s Fifth Annual Art Series. The new work, along with paintings by the artist, will be on view at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center throughout the Company’s winter season, which runs from January 17 to February 26. The NYCB will hold three special Art Series performances and will also allow visitors to view Mustonen’s creations free of charge during special open hours.
Mustonen joins the ranks of NYCB’s past featured Art Series artists FAILE, JR, Dustin Yellin and Marcel Dzama. Last year, Dzama, in addition to creating a site-specific installation for the space, also designed the sets and costumes for one of the 2016 winter season’s productions, Justin Peck’s The Most Incredible Thing.
As for Mustonen’s 2017 commission, the artist will be combining abstract, handcrafted visual imagery with new technology to design a site-specific work that takes advantage of the David H. Koch Theater’s towering height and multiple vantage points. Known for his trippy animations that play off the contradiction of organic and artificial, Mustonen’s previous projects inclue Metamorphosis, a one-day art installation created in collaboration with Hisham Akira Bharoocha for the House of Vans in Brooklyn. The installation featured a large-scale floating sculpture created with projection mapping. To get more of an idea of what to expect from Mustonen, check out the video below.
The NYCB’s three special Art Series performances take place Saturday, January 28, Friday, February 3 and Thursday, February 23, and are each followed by a post-performance party in the theater’s Promenade. Audience members at these shows will also receive a special limited-edition takeaway created by Mustonen to commemorate the NYCB Art Series collaboration. Of note, the program for the performance on January 28, entitled New Combinations, includes the world premiere of a new ballet by Justin Peck featuring a score by dance party starter Dan Deacon. Tickets for all three evenings are on sale now and are $30. For additional information, visit www.nycballet.com/artseries.
