NYC’s Best Comedy Offerings in August: BK Comedy Fest, Hari Kondabolu & More


With all the heat and humidity, it’s best to keep a sense of humor if you’re in New York City in August. Thankfully, there are a number of comedy events coming up that should keep you laughing through those dog days of summer. From Jerry Seinfeld, to Connor Ratliff’s Olympics send off show, to the Brooklyn Comedy Festival and more, below you’ll find our list of the best comedy events in August.

Monday, August 1
Jim Breuer and the Loud & Rowdy
In addition to his stand-up comedy career, former Saturday Night Live cast member Jim Breuer is also the frontman of a rock band. The group released their debut LP earlier this year, Songs From The Garage, and are now out performing shows in support. Channeling 80s metal, old Van Halen, Judas Priest and Megadeth, the group’s mission is to bring the smile back to hard rock. Connor Ratliff’s Olympics Send-Off Spectacular!
Connor Ratliff is a UCB fixture who you may recognize from small roles in Broad City and Veep. Over the last four years, he’s been training to win Gold at the 2016 Summer Olympics, periodically performing athletic workouts with special guests from his elite squad before UCB audiences. With the festivities in Rio about to kick off, Ratliff is hosting this special show/send-off celebration. NYC best comedy events august 2016Hari Kondabolu
One of the top political stand up comics on the scene today, Hari Kondabolu is doing four shows over the course of two nights at the Bell House. Kondabolu, who was an on-camera contributor on FX’s Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell, recently launched a new podcast with Bell, “Politically Re-Active”. It premiered in June on Slate’s podcast network, Panoply. You can give it a listen here. The comedian also has a new album he’s touting, Mainstream American Comic, which came out July 22 on Kill Rock Stars. For a sample, check out a video for his joke “My Mom (Accent Not Included)” here.

Jerry Seinfeld: The Homestand – August Edition
Jerry Seinfeld signed up to perform once a month at the Beacon Theater in 2016. This is his August installment. The comedian recently concluded season 8 of his famed series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. You can check out the last episode, which features Jon Oliver, over here.

Doug Loves Movies – 30th Gramercy Show
Actor/comedian Doug Benson is flying into town to record an episode of his long-running podcast Doug Loves Movies. The show finds him sitting down with three or four special guests (usually funny people) to talk and quiz them about movies. This will be the 30th episode he’s recorded at the Gramercy Theater.

As part of its Comedians in Film series, Nitehawk is presenting a screening of Christian Charles’ 2002 documentary Comedian. The film follows Jerry Seinfeld and up-and-comer Orny Adams as they navigate a life in comedy. The screening, which is of a 35mm print, is introduced by comedian/writer Negin Farsard.

The Macaulay Culkin Show: 3rd Annual Summer Comedy Festival
Here’s a comedy event we can hang our hat on. A super-sized version of the monthly show hosted by Brett Davis and Sally Burtnick, this comedy fete features over 20 of today’s finest up-and-coming comedians each doing five minute sets. Among this year’s performers are Julio Torres (SNL, Billy on the Street), JD Amato (The Chris Gerhard Show), Jo Firestone (Punderdome), Ana Fabrega (The Jim Gafffigan Show), Dan Licata (JASH, Adult Swim), Aparna Nancherla (Conan, Late Night), Brooke Van Poppelen (Hack My Life) and more. Plus, its super affordable with tickets only costing $5. Also, don’t be fooled by the name, as this event has no affiliation with the actor.

Brooklyn Comedy Festival
Brooklyn isn’t playing when it comes to comedy. So much so, a few years back a trio of industrious souls decided to launch a festival celebrating the borough’s thriving scene. Now in its fourth year, the week-long event takes place in variety of venues and showcases both established and up-and-coming performers working in a variety of media, from sketch and standup to improv and the web. Among this year’s highlights are an evening with Reggie Watts at Music Hall of Williamsburg; a breakthrough showcase hosted by Julie Klausner featuring Langston Kerman, Sasheer Zamata and more; a short film program presented by Kickstarter; and a free comedy show/book party for Erin Judge’s Vow of Celibacy with Aparna Nancherla, Myq Kaplan, Phoebe Robinson and more.

Deeply hilarious husband and wife team Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally return to New York City with their comedy variety show, “Summer of 69: No Apostrophe”. Expect funny talking, singing and light petting at this spectacle that has been around the block a few times already, but is finally having its New York City debut.

T.J. Miller Meticulously Ridiculous Tour
This one will require a little bit of travel to get to from New York City, but this funny man is certainly worth the effort. The Silicon Valley star is heading out on a stand-up comedy tour ahead of taping an hourlong special for HBO, the closest it comes to New York City is this stop in Philly and a show in West Nyack. Opening for T.J. Miller is his wife, performer and mixed media artist Kate Miller, who will perform a vaudevillian, dark-humored set, and comedian Nick Vatterott.

Welcome to Night Vale Live Show: Ghost Stories
Here’s another show that isn’t in New York City, but merits the commute. Based on the wildly popular podcast, the Welcome to Night Vale live show features stories from the small desert town of Night Vale told by community radio host Cecil Palmer (played by Cecil Baldwin). In addition to Baldwin’s mesmerizing narration, expect guest stars and a live musical score by Disparition. Created by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, this edition, entitled Ghost Stories, is the fifth live version of the show since it began to tour in 2013.
