Dirty Projectors, Miguel Among Northside Festival 2017 Lineup, Tickets on Sale
With SXSW 2017 a wrap, it’s time to turn our attention to its East Coast counterpart, Northside Festival. Slated to go down June 7-11, the organizers have begun leaking information about the bands who will be performing at the music portion of this year’s North Brooklyn-dwelling extravaganza. Thus far, highlights include Dirty Projectors (June 8), Miguel (June 10), Julia Holter (June 10), Vagabon, She-Devils (June 8), and Kamasi Washington (June 8). Also of note, 33 1/3 is hosting a showcase featuring Lower Dens performing songs off of ABBA’s Gold (June 10), and Mary Timony is revisiting the music of her old band Helium (June 8). The first round of single-show tickets are on sale now, and the RSVP for a free concert on Sunday, June 11 featuring post-hardcore legends Thursday, Toronto punks PUP, Worcester rockers The Hotelier and Jeff Rosenstock is open.
2017 heralds the ninth edition of the Northside Festival. Founded in 2009 by Scott and Daniel Stedman, Northside has gone through a fair amount of changes over the years, some likely due in part to being acquired by Zealot Networks in 2015. When Northside launched it had a film section, but it has since been shed. And, in 2016, the fest solidified its tech component by expanding it and rebranding it Innovation. North Brooklyn’s ever-changing music venue landscape has also presented the festival with some curve balls. Glasslands, and Spike Hill bowed in 2014, with the Livingroom and Trash Bar among those that said so long in 2015. This year, they will be contending with the loss of Aviv, Acheron, Black Bear, the Grand Victory, Manhattan Inn, Palisades and Shea Stadium.
Northside Music, which bills itself as place to discover new bands, has always sweetened the pot each year with shows featuring established acts. This has them duking it out over talent with summer festivals like Governors Ball, SummerStage, Celebrate Brooklyn!,4Knots (which, incidentally, has yet to announce its return for 2017), and Goldenvoice’s Panorama. 2016’s Northside featured Conor Oberst, and Brian Wilson playing Pet Sounds, while previous year’s have played host to Chvrches, Thee Oh Sees, Mac DeMarco, Courtney Barnett, Sharon van Etten, Run the Jewels, Neko Case, Pusha T, The Walkmen, Beirut, and Guided By Voices, among others.
Landing Dirty Projectors for 2017 is certainly a coup for Northside. The recording pursuit of David Longstreth, Dirty Projectors released its long-awaited 7th LP in February. The follow up to the brilliant Swing Lo Magellan (2012), the self-titled album was influenced by Longstreth’s break up with former bandmate Amber Coffman. You can check out a sample below. Dirty Projectors’ appearance at Northside will be the first since the release of the new album. The show goes down at McCarren Park, and also on the bill are jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington, and Bay Area-based singer-songwriter sensation Jay Som.
