Brian Wilson, Conor Oberst, Wolf Parade playing Northside 2016, Innovation Speakers Announced, Tickets On Sale
Considered by some to be the SXSW of Brooklyn, it’s probably not a coincidence that the Northside Festival has leaked its initial lineup just as the festivities in Austin are getting underway. It doesn’t look like the sprawling North Brooklyn-dweller will be getting President Obama or Iggy Pop, but among the confirmed guests for its Innovation conference are Dan Schulman of Paypal, and Piers Fawkes of PSFK, while the music festival is hosting Wolf Parade, who will be headlining a free show in McCarren Park, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, and Conor Oberst. Northside runs June 6-12, 2016 with early bird badges and tickets to single ticket shows now on sale. The RSVP is also open for the free Wolf Parade concert.
Northside Festival has been infiltrating the Williamsburg and Greenpoint neighborhoods of Brooklyn every June since 2009. A place to discover “what’s next” in music, film, technology and design, the fest has hosted hundreds of concerts, screenings and panels over the years. Notable acts of the music portion have included CHVRCHES, Thee Oh Sees, The War on Drugs, Jens Lekman, The Walkmen, Sharon Van Etten, Iceage, Guided by Voices, and Mac DeMarco. In terms of its Innovation component, which consists of a conference and free expo, past years’ attendees have hobnobbed with reps from Tumblr, WeWork, Airbnb, MasterCard, Bloomberg, and more. As for film, the section has featured indies like Fort Tilden, and Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry. From the looks of Northside’s website, the film section is being rebranded “Content.” There is sure to be more on that to come.
The music portion, which takes place June 9-12, is the most sussed out component of the 2016 festivities at present with the announcement of three outdoor shows in McCarren Park. On Thursday, June 9, newly reunited Canadian rockers Wolf Parade, who are playing five sold out nights at Bowery Ballroom in May, will play a free show that you can RSVP for here. Saturday, June 11 sees a ticketed show featuring Country music darling Kacey Musgraves, indie-rock oracle Conor Oberst and folk rockers The Felice Brothers. Sunday, June 12 finds Brian Wilson stopping in amid his 50th anniversary Pet Sounds tour in which the artist performs the album in its entirety with support from classic band members Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin. Also on that bill are ROSTAM, the new project of ex-Vampire Weekend bandmate Rostam Batmanglij, and Madrid garage rockers Hinds. Tickets for those shows are $35 in adv/$40 at the door and are available here and here, respectively.
Other bands announced for 2016 include Steve Gunn, The Cave Singers, Peanut Butter Wolf, King Khan and the Shrines, Cut Worms, Diet Cig, and UK punk legends Subhumans. Tickets are available for those shows here.
As mentioned above, the fest also shared some of its panelists for Northside Innovation. In addition to Schulman and Fawkes, other speakers include Ryan Leslie of Musician Superphone, Sam Olstein of GE, and Michael Mignano of Anchor.FM. Innovation runs June 9-10, 2016. You can go here for additional information, or here to snag a free pass to the expo which features over 150 exhibitors.
