New Year’s Day 2016 Happenings in NYC

After New Year’s Eve comes New Year’s Day, and for those either up for more celebrating or looking for a way to nurse that hangover, we’ve assembled a tidy list of things to do. From poetry to a movie marathon to a hair of the dog party, your options run the gamut. Happy 2016!

42nd Annual New Year’s Day Marathon Benefit Reading
As far as New Year’s traditions go, stopping in on the Poetry Project’s annual marathon reading is up there with drinking champagne at midnight and singing Auld Lang Syne with friends. Now in its 42nd year, the inspiring 12-hour benefit features an all-star cast of poets, writers, performers and other luminaries expounding on whatever they see fit for the occasion. Among those stepping up to this year’s podium are Jonas Mekas, Thurston Moore, Édgar Oliver, Martha Wilson, Eileen Myles, Philip Glass, Penny Arcade, and many, many more. It’s very free form, so folks can stop in whenever, but keep in mind that the most crowded times are between 7pm-10pm.

After playing the Music Hall of Williamsburg on New Year’s Eve, Brooklyn’s own They Might Be Giants are ready to do it again on New Year’s Day. 2015 was a fruitful year for the group, it yielded the release of Glean, which features songs from their epic 2015 Dial-A-Song project, as well as the release of the kid-friendly Why?. The guys are about to head off on a UK and US tour, but before they do, they are paying Brooklyn their respects. The theme for the New Year’s Day show is “Flood”.
