An early Leos Carax (Holy Motors), Mauvais Sang is futuristic romantic thriller that is part of the filmmaker’s Alex trilogy. It finds his cinematic alter ego Denis Lavant playing a young hustler who has been roped into a gangster’s plot. But, on the way to stealing the antidote to a deadly virus sweeping the country, Lavant’s character falls for the boss’ much younger girlfriend Juliette Binoche. A bizarre, colorful and exhilarating ride, Mauvais Sang contains Lavant’s mad dash through the streets as David Bowie’s Modern Love plays on. That sequence alone is worth the cost of admission.
