Mikal Cronin Teams With Kurt Braunoholer & Kristen Schaal for Remake of Imbruglia Video
For fans of Mikal Cronin, today is a happy day indeed. It marks the release of his third album, MCIII. To celebrate, he performed Turn Around with a string quartet last night on Conan (if you missed it, you can see it here), and today he released a new video that should win favor with comedy fans. The video sees Cronin teaming up with comedians Kurt Braunoholer and Kristen Schaal for a reenactment of Natalie Imbruglia’s music video for her 1997 break out hit Torn. For those in need of a refresher on the original, it was directed by Alison Maclean (Jesus’ Son) and features shots of Imbruglia and Jeremy Sheffield trying to act out a scene interspersed with her singing directly to the camera.
The Braunoholer-directed update is pure genius and features Schaal sporting a short, dark-haired wig, and making hilarious facial expressions and body jestures. The Kool Aid Man even makes a cameo. The video is part of JASH’s $5K video series that partners up-and-coming musical acts with a comedian and gives them a $5,000 budget. Other videos in the series include Nick Catchdubs/Scott Jacobson’s Bizness, and Thundercat/Eric Andre’s Tron Song.
Cronin takes the stage at the Bowery Ballroom tonight before heading off to Europe. See a complete list of tour dates as well as the video for Turn Around below.
