Filmmaker Michael Moore Unveils His October Surprise, ‘Michael Moore in TrumpLand’
Michael Moore has come up with his own October surprise this election cycle and it lands in theaters in New York City and Los Angeles tomorrow. It comes in the form of a one-man show that he performed live in front an audience in Ohio, or what he likes to call the “Land o’Trump”, and made into a documentary called Michael Moore in TrumpLand. The film will be in select theaters for one week only starting October 19. For those in New York City, a free sneak preview of the film is being held tonight at 9:30pm at the IFC Center with Moore in person. Tickets will be available at the box office one hour before showtime.
If you follow Moore on Facebook, you may have already heard some about the project. Moore was originally going to perform the show and film it on October 7 in Newark, Ohio, the seat of Licking County, right in the heart of Trump Country. But, three weeks before the show was set to go on Moore’s production received a note that the community board that oversees the theater that he had booked had voted to not allow him to perform the show there, calling him controversial. There was also fear among the conservative board that Moore would try to sway people’s minds to vote his way.
Moore isn’t one to give up, so he pushed on to find a new theater that would have him. Fortunately, he found one in the small Republican town of Wilmington, Ohio. The Murphy Theatre rented their space to Moore, who did two free shows, October 6 and 7. Moore’s goal with the shows was to try to meet Ohio’s Trump supporters half-way and give them a good laugh about this year’s crazy presidential election.
Flash-foward 11 days since the Ohio shows, and Moore has completed his film and is ready for its grand unveiling. For more information about the screenings at IFC Center visit the theater’s website. For screenings in Los Angeles, visit the Laemmle Town Center 5 in Encino’s website. UPDATE: Michael Moore in Trumpland is also available now on iTunes.
