Margaret Qualley & Miranda July Both Headed to Sundance, Could This Be a Festival to Remember?

It’s been all quiet on the Miranda July-Margaret Qualley love affair front since they performed the Hazion Circle ceremony in December. But could that change now that both artists will be at the Sundance Film Festival this weekend? We’ve known July was going for a while now, but yesterday confirmation came that Qualley would also attend with the new Olivia Wilde-directed short, Wake Up. The Emmy-nominated and Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood breakout actress stars in Wilde’s film, which you can watch the trailer for below.

The first inkling that something was afoot in the Qualley camp came on January 16th. Qualley posted a photo of Olivia Wilde on her Instagram with the caption, “See you at Sundance my friend 🙂 also probably see you this weekend… but 👋.”

Then yesterday, People broke the trailer for Wilde’s Wake Up, a short film starring Qualley that will have its debut on Friday at an event in Park City, Utah to coincide with the Sundance Film Festival. It was all coming into focus.

Qualley desperate to connect in Wilde’s ‘Wake Up’ trailer

Margaret Qualley Wake Up Trailer PosterIn the trailer for Wake Up, Qualley is Jane Doe, a woman forced to rediscover her humanity in an increasingly digital world. First, we see her waking up in a hospital diagnosed as a dissociative fugue. Later, she’s running through the streets of New York City, trying to connect with people. However, most of the strangers she approaches are too occupied with their electronic devices. The trailer also shows Qualley pulling out some dance moves at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Wilde, who stepped into the director’s spotlight last year with her feature debut Booksmart, worked with Oscar-nominated cinematographer Matty Libatique on the short. Libatique’s feature film credits include Black Swan, Mother!, A Star Is Born, and Sundance Film Festival award-winner Pi. He was also recently the DP on Alex Prager’s gorgeous short Play the Wind, which stars another breakout actress, Riley Keough. Prager’s film was on view at Lehmann Maupin Gallery in New York City last year.

Produced by the Lab at Anonymous Content, Wake Up will have its world premiere on Friday, January 24th at the Garage by HP pop-up at Sundance. The film is in keeping with HP’s current marketing campaign that revolves around “less screen time and more real time in 2020.” Both Qualley and Wilde should be in attendance for the film’s grand unveiling.

July to premiere her long-awaited third feature at Sundance

As for July, Kajillionaire, her long-awaited third feature following Me and You and Everyone We Know (2005) and The Future (2011), is screening at Sundance in the Premieres section. The film is a coming of age story about Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood), a woman raised by con artists. After meeting Melanie (Gina Rodriguez), a kind stranger her parent’s rope into their next scheme, Old Dolio finds herself torn between staying with her family and the prospect of total freedom. Kajillionaire will world premiere at Sundance on Saturday night (January 25th).

Sharon Van Etten, another accomplice in the July/Qualley saga, also attending Sundance

Perhaps another coincidence (or not?), Sharon Van Etten, who composed the music for July and Qualley’s Hazion Circle ceremony, is also on her way to Sundance. The singer-songwriter wrote the end credit song for and guest stars in Eliza Hittman’s Never Rarely Sometimes Always. The film has its world premiere on Friday, January 24th. Van Etten will also perform on Saturday, January 25th at the Celebration of Music and Film along with Rufus Wainwright and Jorge Aragon Brito.

Will July come in one day early to celebrate with her wife? Or, will Qualley stick around a couple of days to enjoy July’s premiere? Perhaps they can attend Van Etten’s concert together on Saturday. You know we’ll be tuning in to their respective Instagram accounts to find out.

UPDATE: Wake Up, the short film Qualley is now streaming. You can watch it here.

UPDATE 1/29: Aha! According to the post below from July’s Instagram, there was a Qualley, July, and Van Etten meet up at Sundance. Jaden Smith was there too! Alas, no pictures. We watched July’s conversation with the marble lady on the bus at Sundance. It was fascinating stuff, but we would have preferred the Hazion Circle reunion.Qualley July Sundance Text Message
