Malkovich Shares ‘Like a Puppet Show’ Track Mixed by OMD, Record out Today
Like a Puppet Show has to be one of the most hotly anticipated, if not bizarre releases of this year’s Black Friday edition of Record Store Day. A collaboration between actor/chameleon John Malkovich, director/photographer Sandro, and producer/composer Eric Alexandrakis, the record finds the two-time Academy Award nominee reciting Plato’s Allegory of the Cave over an original piece of ambient music by Alexandrakis, while being paired with exclusive photos of Malkovich taken by Sandro. And, to add to the intrigue, each song was retooled by a special guest artist. The tracks mixed by Yoko Ono & Sean Lennon (“Cryolife 7:14 A.M.”) and Ric Ocasek (“Cryoblue Cheese Ο”) were previously leaked, and now “Cryocarbon 14C”, mixed by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), is available for your aural enjoyment. You can take a listen to all three tracks below.
Whereas Ocasek gave his song a sinister cast, and Yoko and Sean went the psychedelic route, OMD, who found the project to be a great challenge, delivered a sci-fi inflected composition that dialed up their electro-Kraftwerkian goodness. We predict it will be coming to a dance club near you very soon.
Other featured artists on the record include Dweezil Zappa, Young the Giant, The Dandy Warhols, Efterklang, Placebo, Chris Stein of Blondie, Harry Waters (son of Roger Waters), and The Cranberries’ Dolores O’Riordan. It’s quite an eclectic group.
You can get your hands on this extraordinary spoken-word project starting today at one of the local record stores listed here. It’s being released through the trio’s own Cryogenia π label, but be warned, it’s only available in vinyl, so you better have a player. To celebrate its arrival, Malkovich, Sandro and Alexandrakis will be doing a Periscope stream at 2:50PM PST via www.periscope.tv/alexandrakisbe, where they will be answering questions submitted to them via info [at] cryogeniapi.com. They will also be doing a signing and Q&A at Music Millennium in Portland, Oregon starting around 3pm PST.
