Seemingly out of the blue, Mac DeMarco made a surprise appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert YouTube channel on Friday afternoon. The Canadian crooner premiered a new song featuring Jon Batiste. Check out their performance of “Fooled by Love” below.

This isn’t the first time Mac has performed “Fooled by Love” for an audience. He played a rendition (sans Jon Batiste) for the Return to the Heart Foundation Solstice Livestream Benefit that took place last week. During that performance, he briefly forgets the lyrics, but quickly recovers. You can watch the clip below (h/t Mac DeMarco Archives).

For The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Mac sits poolside at his home in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. Positioned next to him is one of the prosthetic masks from his “On the Square” video. As he plays, it continuously rotates. Mac launches a drum beat and strums his acoustic while The Late Show with Stephen Colbert bandleader joins in on piano. “Fooled by Love” is a beautiful song about getting over unrequited love.

Coming up in the Mac universe, the musician will release Other Here Comes The Cowboy Demos on Record Store Day on August 29, 2020. It’s a brand new collection of demos and unheard compositions recorded during the Here Comes the Cowboy sessions. And, according to Mac’s website, he will have other offerings for RSD September 26, 2020, and RSD October 24, 2020. Here Comes the Cowboy Demos, a separate LP from the aforementioned, recently leaked on Spotify, but it has since come down. It is expected to release on all formats soon.
