Mac DeMarco Played Planned Parenthood Benefit, Covered Billy Joel, Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons (Videos)
Panache Booking and New York Night Train’s annual Village of Love benefit concert and dance for Planned Parenthood went down last night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. One of the many highlights of the evening was Mac DeMarco’s three-song set that included covers of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons’ “December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)” and Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are”. You can find videos for the covers below, as well as a few photos of his set.
DeMarco’s rendition of Joel’s classic was a definite crowd pleaser, but it was slightly abbreviated. If you watch below, you’ll find that he makes a slight error in the first verse but quickly recovers, and then he decides to “f*ck the bridge.” As for “December 1963”, he seemed to be channeling Jonathan Richman, adding in some hip gyrations. Please note, the video we have of “December 1963” is only of a portion of the song.
DeMarco closed out his set with his very own “Still Together.” During the song, he put down his guitar and did a one of his customary stage dives. Unprompted, Delicate Steve got behind the drum kit to help DeMarco keep things going.
Having just returned from an extensive tour of Australia and New Zealand, DeMarco plans to hit the road again in the spring in support of his mini-LP Another One, out now on Captured Tracks. His tour dates are listed below and include two shows in New York City, May 15 and 16 at Webster Hall. Both are sold out.
For those that simply can’t get enough of DeMarco, he recently unveiled a new website (www.mac-demarco.com), where he plans to post updates, and he also launched the Mac DeMarco Fan Club. The Club is managed by DeMarco, his mother Agnes DeMarco, who is Fan Club secretary, and Panache Booking’s Michelle Cable. For more information about the Club, visit the Fan Club’s website.
