Free Things to Do in NYC Labor Day Weekend 2016: Fireworks, Governors Island Art Fair, Point Break LIVE, Beach Parties & More


Labor Day is here and rather than cry in our beer over summer’s end, we’re working with it the best we know how, by finding awesome free things to do. This weekend’s picks include an art show at Governors Island, fireworks, Shakespeare, seaside parties, a Star Trek-themed art show and more. We’ve also thrown in a few paid admission events at the bottom, if you have some cash to spare.

PARTY: Select Summer Fridays: Joakim for Labor Day Weekend hosted by Kate Atherton
This weekly summertime chillfest goes big for Labor Day weekend featuring renown France electronic artists Joakim on the decks.

Jamie Keeling’s live theatrical parody of 1991 zen surfing classic Point Break is performed for one night only at Rockaway Beach Surf Club. Of note, this production is known to recruit a willing audience member to play Johnny Utah.

FIREWORKS: Friday Night Fireworks
It’s the last weekly fireworks display of the season in Coney Island. For best viewing, head to boardwalk or beach between West 10th Street and West 15th Street.

THEATER: Shakespeare: Measure for Measure
Critically acclaimed troupe The Drilling Company returns to Bryant Park to present their final Shakespearean production of the season, Measure for Measure. The production runs through September 17.

ART: 9th Annual Governors Island Art Fair
This annual community-minded art fair takes over abandoned military barracks on Governors Island and fills them with painting, photography, sculpture, installation, video, and sound art. New this year, the fest expands to Castle Williams. Open every weekend in September.

Infuse your Labor Day weekend with some classics by The Beatles, Queen, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and much more performed by the Staten Island Philharmonic. FESTIVAL: Caribbean Carnival
Costume bands, masqueraders, moko jumbos, and more bring the caribbean spirit to the streets of Crown Heights. This annual event is always one of the summer’s most colorful and exciting celebrations and also features food, arts and crafts and more. The parade comes at the end of a 4-day string of events organized by the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA).

Food Karma Projects is teaming up with Extra Crispy for a food festival devoted to the first meal of the day, breakfast.
