Terrence Malick’s Spellbinding ‘Knight of Cups’ Opens in NY/LA, Watch Video Featuring Diplo Remix
Happy March, Terrence Malick fans. This month sees the auteur’s seventh feature, Knight of Cups, entering theaters. The film, which stars Christian Bale, follows a Los Angeles-dwelling screenwriter named Rick as he embarks on a search for love and self. During his odyssey, he comes in contact with a mesmeric cast of characters played by the likes of Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Brian Dennehy, Wes Bentley, Freida Pinto, Antonio Banderas, and Imogen Poots. The film opens in New York at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema and AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13, and in Los Angeles at the ArcLight and The Landmark on Friday, March 4 with other cities to follow. You can tune into the film’s trailer below, as well as a video featuring a remix from Diplo.
Believed to be the third in a semi-autobiographical trilogy that includes Malick’s Tree of Life and To the Wonder, Knight of Cups is a beautifully crafted, dialogue-lite work that takes its name from the Tarot. In terms of structure, the film is divided into eight chapters. Each chapter, except for the last, is named for a Tarot card – The Moon, The Hanged Man, The Hermit, Judgement, The Tower, The High Priestess, and Death – and explores different relationships/encounters along the hero’s journey.
Knight of Cups finds the filmmaker re-teaming with superstar DP Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki, who also worked with Malick on The New World, Tree of Life and To the Wonder. Lubezki’s name should ring bells for those up on their Oscars, as he recently took home his third for The Revenant. He is also featured on the cover of this week’s issue of Variety, the first cinematographer to ever have the honor. For this film, Lubezki employs a fragmented visual dreamlike style that elevates the director’s musings, delivering a spellbinding and poetic piece of cinema.
Don't miss Christian Bale, Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchett in Terrence Malick's #KnightOfCups. Playing in select NY/LA theatres this Friday, nationwide March 11!
