KEXP Performing 12-Hour Breakdown of De La Soul’s ‘3 Feet High and Rising’
Last year, KEXP performed an epic deconstruction of the Beastie Boy’s Paul’s Boutique. Over the course of a day, the Seattle indie radio station broke down the classic LP into its component parts and played every song the band sampled on the album. It all went over so swimmingly that KEXP has decided to do again. This time around they are dissecting De La Soul’s 1989 debut 3 Feet High and Rising. Starting at 6am PT/9am ET on Friday, August 26, KEXP will devote 12 hours to the seminal hip-hop classic. Tune in to hear the entire album, plus related B-sides and rarities, and all the original record’s sample sources, including songs by Johnny Cash, the Turtles, Hall & Oates, Funkadelic, and James Brown. Also, Street Sounds host Larry Mizell, Jr. will be interviewing members of the band as well as producer Prince Paul. You can listen in on all the fun below.
KEXP’s celebration of De La Soul’s groundbreaking record comes as the band releases their ninth studio album, …And The Anonymous Nobody. Funded via Kickstarter, the record features collaborations with Pete Rock, 2 Chainz, Snoop Dogg, Damon Albarn (of Gorillaz), Little Dragon, Estelle and more. It is available for purchase here.
