Jonathan Horowitz Needs People to Paint More Dots
Jonathan Horowitz hasn’t given up on those dots. After taking Frieze New York by storm with his 700 Dots project in Gavin Brown’s Enterprise’s booth, the artist is doing a smaller scale project at the Swiss Institute in conjunction with Niele Toroni’s current show.
Horowitz’s new project, titled 160 Dots, is comprised of a 50 ft. bolt of fabric on which 160 participants will each paint a dot following specifications outlined by the artist. Provided the work is sold, the participants and Horowitz will decide together how to divvy up the proceeds.
The artist is currently looking for participants for the project, which will take place September 2 at 7pm at the Swiss Institute. And, whereas each “painter” in his Frieze experiment received a $20 payment on a check hand-drawn by Horowitz, this project sounds like it is taking a more democratic approach. If interested in participating, email the gallery at rsvp@swissinstitute.net.
Horowitz’s project is perfectly in line with the artistic practice of Toroni, whose show at the gallery runs through September 6. Toroni’s work is comprised of imprints of a number 50 brush at regular intervals on a variety of surfaces, including waxed fabric, canvas, and paper. The show at the Swiss Institute is the artist’s first in the US in over 25 years and spans five decades of his career.
