Steve Carell Plays Democrat Consultant in Trailer for Jon Stewart Political Satire ‘Irresistible’ (Watch)
With the state of politics the way it is, the Democrats could use a good left-leaning political satire right about now. And, thanks to former The Daily Show host Jon Stewart, it looks like one is coming their way. Focus Features shared the first trailer for Irresistible, Stewart’s sophomore feature that he both wrote and directed. You can watch the trailer for Irresistible below.
In the trailer, Steve Carell plays Garry Zimmer, a D.C. Democrat political consultant who finds the next candidate he wants to back via a viral video titled “Hero Marine stands up for immigrants.” The man in the video is retired ex-Marine Colonel Jack Hastings, played by Chris Cooper.
Zimmer travels to Hastings’ rural home of Deerlaken, Wisconsin, the heart of swing-state country. He is clearly a fish out of water there, but he’s able to convince the ex-Marine to run for Mayor. They quickly get to work on Hastings’ campaign.
However, just as the Dem candidate is gaining ground, enter Faith Brewster (Rose Byrne), a political operative for the other side. She begins her campaign of lies and fear-mongering. We can’t wait to see how this one turns out.
It’s always a pleasure to see Cooper in a film. He delivered wonderful performances last year in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. But it is a little surprising to see him cast as the mayoral candidate here. Cooper didn’t do so well the last time he ran for office in John Sayles’ Silver City. He was a Republican back then, so maybe the change of party affiliation will serve him better.
Produced by Stewart and Brad Pitt’s Plan B, Irresistible also stars Topher Grace, Natasha Lyonne, Mackenzie Davis, CJ Wilson, and Will Sasso. A Focus Features release, the film opens in theaters May 29, 2020.
