Japanese Pop Culture Fest Waku Waku +NYC Invades this Weekend

waku wakuIf anime, manga and cosplay are part of your regular vocabulary, then have we got an event for you. Going down this weekend in northern Brooklyn, Waku Waku +NYC is a festival of Japanese pop culture that brings together the worlds of anime, manga, music, food, film and fashion. It’s like a cross between Sakura Matsuri and Comic Con.

In Japanese, waku waku means “a dream-like excitement”, which is what the organizers of this inaugural fete are hoping attendees attain through exposure to exhibits, panels, screenings and interactive activities. In addition to an expo where you can browse the wares of over 70 anime and manga companies, highlights of the two-day fest include a PUTUMAYO fashion show, a screening of two Dragon Ball Z movies presented by screenwriter Takao Koyama, a sneak preview of video game Mighty No. 9, a concert featuring DJ ☆Taku Takahashi, singer Yun*chi, and the BELLA GAIA immersive cosmic experience, and SCRAP’s 1000 Treasure Hunters, the first outdoor puzzle hunt in New York City. You’ll also be able to snack on fine Japanese fare from places like Ippudo NY, Totto Ramen, KATSU-HAMA, and Dotonbori Kukuru in the event’s Savory Square.

Waku Waku +NYC Sebastian MasudaSebastian Masuda, artist and director of kawaii‐themed concept shop 6%DOKIDOKI, is also flying in for the occasion. You may be familiar with his giant Hello Kitty time capsule sculpture which is installed at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza. For Waku Waku +NYC, the kawaii culture ambassador is exhibiting his Miami bear time capsule in Transmitter Park. You can either bring a memorial item or join Masuda’s workshop in the park to create something for it. At 3pm on Sunday, August 30, a bus, which you are welcome to board, will travel with all of the items from Transmitter Park to the site for the Hello Kitty sculpture in Manhattan.

Waku Waku +NYC is set to unfold August 29 and 30 at Greenpoint/Williamsburg venues Brooklyn Expo Center, Brooklyn Bowl, Wythe Hotel, Transmitter Park and Verboten.
