Iggy Pop & Josh Homme Announce New Album ‘Post Pop Depression’ on Colbert, Perform ‘Gardenia’
Iggy Pop and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) went to the desert and recorded a secret album. Entitled Post Pop Depression, the record is due out March 18. The pair announced the project earlier tonight on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and performed the first single “Gardenia.” You can watch the performance and the announcement below.
According to Iggy, the project came together after he proposed to Homme via text message on his flip phone. Iggy wanted to write and record something, and Homme wanted whatever they did to be kept secret. So the pair shacked up for a few weeks at Homme’s recording studio in Joshua Tree and produced the album with the help of Homme’s Queens Of The Stone Age bandmate and Dead Weather-man Dean Fertita, and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders.
In a press release announcing the album, Iggy was quoted as saying, “I wanted to be free. To be free, I needed to forget. To forget, I needed music. Josh had that in him, so I set out to provoke an encounter-first with a carefully worded text, followed by a deluge of writings all about me. No composer wants to write about nothing. He got revved up and we had a great big rumble in the desert USA.”
The record will be supported by a tour that will feature the core band that recorded the album along with QOTSA’s Troy Van Leeuwen and guitarist Matt Sweeney of Chavez. Post Pop Depression is now available for pre-order via iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, and the Iggy Pop webstore, with all pre-orders immediately receiving “Gardenia.” You can find the track list for the album below.
