‘Documentary Now!’ Spoofs Marina Abramovic & Space-Race Documentaries in Season 3
If you’re like us and can’t seem to get enough of Bill Hader, we have good news. Documentary Now! will be returning to IFC in early 2019 with seven all-new episodes. At a press conference, series co-creator Seth Meyers shared that the third season will include an homage to historical space-race documentaries, and an episode inspired by 2012’s Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present. Production of the new season gets underway this June.
Documentary Now! debuted on IFC in 2015 and was born from the adage that parody is the sincerest form of flattery. The brainchild of Seth Meyers, Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, and Rhys Thomas, the first two seasons feature Armisen and Hader in endearing spoofs of such documentaries as The War Room (1993), Grey Gardens (1975), Stop Making Sense (1984), The Kid Stays in the Picture (2002), and Jiro Dreams of Sushi (2011). The show also finds Lorne Michaels attached as executive producer, and John Mulaney and SNL writer Erik Kenward serving as consulting producers.
Included in what has been disclosed so far about the third season are the titles of two episodes. The space-race fashioned show, which will be filmed in a style alluding to the 1998 miniseries From Earth to the Moon, is called “One Giant Leap” and follows the journey of the heroes that pulled off the Apollo 11 moon landing. As for the episode that pokes fun at the Abramovic documentary, it is entitled “Waiting for the Artist” and it revolves around a performance artist as she prepares for a major career retrospective.
As we await the return of the show, below are a couple highlights from passed seasons. You can also follow along here for updates.
