Halloween at the Movies, Special Screenings & Series in NYC This Weekend & Beyond
In addition to crazy parties, costumes, candy and haunted houses, Halloween is also synonymous with scary movies. If sitting in a dark theater and taking in a thriller is what you seek this holiday weekend, we’ve put together some options. In the mix are William Friedkin’s The Exorcist screening at MoMA, a terrific film series at the Anthology Film Archives, Ben Wheatley at the Museum of the Moving Image, and more.
PopRally Presents: HallowSCREEN
Nothing like an open bar and a screening of William Friedkin’s The Exorcist (1973) to get you in the Halloween spirit. Hosted by PopRally, this MoMA event is costume friendly and also features a trivia contest with prizes awarded. As for the film, the classic stars Linda Blair as a innocent young girl who appears to be seized by satan. Max von Sydow is called in by the church to save the day.

Screen Slate presents this series at the Anthology Film Archives that presents horror films in which cinema, TV or the internet play a role. Trouble Every Day: Halloween at Metrograph
Metrograph and streaming service Shudder have teamed up to bring six ghoulish classics to the big screen this Halloween. Named after Claire Denis’ Trouble Every Day, the series also features screenings of Tales from the Darkside (1990), cult classic Strange Behavior (1981), Roger Corman’s The Masque of the Red Death (1964), Supernatural (1933), and Def by Temptation (1990), which will be introduced by one of the film’s stars, Rony Clanton.

Midnight Movie: Under the Shadow
Babak Anvari’s thriller Under the Shadow screens in one of IFC Center’s midnight film slots this weekend. Premiering to rave reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the film is set in a Tehran apartment during the terrifying final days of the Iran-Iraq War. Under the Shadow also has the honor of being the UK’s Foreign-Language Oscar entry.

Ben Wheatley: Confusion and Carnage
It’s Ben Wheatley day at the Museum of the Moving Image on Saturday in honor of Adam Nayman’s new book Ben Wheatley: Confusion and Carnage. Nayman will be on hand to sign copies and give his personal take on Wheatley’s films which tend to be horrific, violent and wickedly funny. Screening will be gangster crime drama Down Terrace (1:30pm) and Wheatley’s slow-burn thriller Kill List (4pm).

The Face of Another, Followed by a talk with Tatsuya Nakadai
The Japan Society presents a 50th anniversary screening of Hiroshi Teshigahara’s The Face of Another with actor Tatsuya Nakadai in person for a post-screening panel discussion. The sci-fi classic is about a businessman, Okuyama, whose is fitted with a prosthetic mask after a work-related accident leaves his face severely burnt and disfigured. This event is presented in conjunction with the Japan Society Gallery exhibition Simon Starling: At Twilight (After W.B. Yeats’ Noh Reincarnation), which explores the impact of noh on art in Western Modernism.

Syndicated in Brooklyn has three Halloween-themed films on tap for the holiday. The night kicks off with Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘R Treat (2007) (6pm), which interweaves five tales of terror and stars Anna Paquin, Brian Cox and Dylan Baker.
