Halloween 2015: A Round-Up of Scary Movies Screening in NYC This Week
In addition to costumes, candy, haunted houses, and crazy parties, Halloween is also a time to roll out the horror films. There is nothing quite like sitting in a dark theater and having the bejesus scared out of you. If you want to cozy up to a screen this week, we put together some Halloween-themed options. In the mix are the films of the late Wes Craven, the 9th edition of the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Scary Movies, a David Cronenberg horror weekend and more.
Rooftop Film Series: Halloween Flicks – Nightmare on Elm Street
Get your fright on for free at the this screening of Wes Craven’s classic slasher film Nightmare on Elm Street. Co-presented by Space Ninety 8 and the Gorbals, the screening takes place on the roof and features complimentary popcorn and drink specials.

Wes Craven Memorial Marathon

Rooftop Films: The Returned Season 2 Premiere and October Horror
Rooftop Films is temporarily coming out of hibernation to host a free screening of the Season 2 Premiere of SundanceTV’s The Returned followed by a program of short horror films from around the world. The evening is co-hosted by SundanceTV and Indiewire and also features music by instrumental trio Big Lazy and a pre-screening reception.

Rocky Horror Picture Show
Spend Halloween eve with Brad, Janet, Dr. Frank-N-Furter and a cast of unusual characters as The Rocky Picture Show screens outdoors at the McCarren Park pool deck. Trouble Every Day
Claire Denis’ French erotic horror film Trouble Every Day screens at Spectacle. The films stars Vincent Gallo as a doctor who travels to Paris with his new wife for what she believes is their honeymoon, but he has something else in mind.

Scary Movies 9
Warning: over exposure to this film series could cause nightmares. Put together by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, the six-day program features a mix of both old and new horror films. Among the line-up are Sean Byrne’s The Devil’s Candy (2015) starring Ethan Embry, Bernard Rose’s Frankenstein (2015), Terence Fisher’s The Gorgon (1964) featuring Christopher Lee, and Southbound (2015), an anthology film that takes viewers on a menacing ride. The series also pays homage to Larry Fessenden with a screening of The Last Winter (2006) followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker and special guests. And, if you make it out for opening night, the screening is followed by a Mischief Night! celebration with treats and drinks, costumes encouraged.

It Came from Within: A David Cronenberg Horror Weekend
Once nicknamed the Baron of Blood, Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg (History of Violence, Eastern Promises) began his career making psychological horror films. This Halloween weekend, the Museum of the Moving Image revisits his early cinematic works. Among the films screening are The Fly (1986), Shivers (a.k.a. It Came from Within) (1975), Dead Ringers (1988), Scanners (1981), Videodrome (1983), The Brood (1979), and Rabid (1977). All will be shown in new 35 prints or digital restorations.

Halloween Extravaganza ft. a screening of Nosferatu (1922)
F.W. Murneau’s silent classic Nosferatu (1922) is often referred to as the scariest movie of all time. This Halloween you can catch it at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine’s annual Halloween celebration. Organist Timothy Brumfield will be providing accompaniment and Ralph Lee and the Mettawee River Theater Company’s ghosts and ghouls will be taking over the church’s nave. There will be two screenings of the film, the 7pm is sold out, but tickets are still available for 10pm.

3-D Halloween at Film Forum

Videology Becomes the Winchester Tavern
This Halloween, Videology is transforming into the pub from Edgar Wright’s zombie-infested cult hit Shaun of the Dead. The film will be on continuous loop all day and the bar will be serving up drink and shot specials, prizes, and more. Come prepared to kick some zombie butt.
