Keep those wallets closed culture lovers, New York City is chock full of free ways to get your entertainment on this week. In this edition, we suggest film screenings, concerts, a talk with Salma Hayek, an immersive art installation featuring the music of Matthew Dear, Hank Willis Thomas’ The Truth Is I See You and more.

Monday, August 3
Free events NYC August 2015 Marathon ManFILM: Marathon Man
The 1976 suspense thriller starring Dustin Hoffman as a Columbia graduate student and long-distance runner who becomes embroiled in a plot involving nazis and stolen gems screens at Bryant Park. Laurence Olivier earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his portrayal of Dr. Christian Szell in the John Schlesinger-directed film based on William Goldman’s book.

FILM: Tom at the Farm
Videology hosts a sneak preview screening of Canadian director Xavier Dolan’s psychological thriller Tom at the Farm. The film stars Dolan as a man who travels to a remote country farm for the funeral of his lover Guillaume. He soon finds that Guillaume’s family is unaware of his existence and is expecting a woman in his place. The film opens at the Village East Cinema on August 14.

Free events NYC August 2015 Williamsburg Spelling BeeCOMEDY: Williamsburg Spelling Bee
bobby blue & Jen Dziura return to Pete’s Candy Store to host another edition of their adult Spelling Bee. The first 15 people to sign up get to compete, all others can stick around for the amusement.
Time: Sign up at 7pm, Spelling starts at 7:30pm.

Tuesday, August 4
ART: Hank Willis Thomas: The Truth Is I See You
Brooklyn-based artist Hank Willis Thomas continues his exploration into the nature of truth and understanding across cultures with his public artwork The Truth Is I See You. The installation is populated with comic book-inspired speech balloon signs filled with phrases of a poem Thomas wrote in collaboration with artist Ryan Alexiev. On the opening day of the installation, In Search of the Truth (The Truth Booth) will also be on display. A mobile interactive video recording booth, members of the public are invited to enter the work and finish the statement “The truth is…” while looking into a camera. These two-minute responses will be compiled by the artists as part of the ongoing global project. The Truth Booth will return on September 26, 12noon to 8pm at Atlantic Terminal Plaza, October 15, 12noon to 8pm at MetroTech Commons and a TBD date in May 2016.

Free events NYC August 2015 mallrats posterFILM: Mallrats
For the second installment of this summer’s Nitehawk Outdoors, the Williamsburg theater presents Kevin Smith’s cult classic Mallrats. The film is about two dudes, T.S. and Brody, who loiter at their local mall after being dumped by their girlfriends. Kevin Smith will do a Q&A before the movie and DJ Steve Reynolds of Party Like It’s 1999 provides tunes. Oddfellows Ice Cream, Luzzo’s Pizza, Best Buds Burritos, and Landhaus will have food for sale. Seating is first-come, first-served.

MUSIC: Lincoln Center Out of Doors: Full Band Electric Counterpoint & Dither with Lee Ranaldo, Yo La Tengo and Mark Stewart
Head to Damrosch Park Bandshell for an evening of music featuring electric guitar quartet Dither performing with Lee Ranaldo and Yo La Tengo. This special event also includes a performance of Steve Reich’s iconic work Electronic Counterpoint. Electronic duo Matmos open the night.

RiverRocks closes out its season on a high note. Performing are U.S. Girls, the project of Illinois-born, Toronto-based artist Meghan Remy, whose 4AD debut ‘Half Free’ is out Sept. 25. Also playing are Yuck, the London-based indie rock foursome drop by amid a brief US tour. The group are currently finishing up their third album, which will be out in 2016.

Before their show at Bowery Ballroom, (the) Thurston MoOre Baand will be stopping by Other Music for a meet, greet and signing with fans. The group, which consists of Thurston Moore, Deb Googe, James Sedwards and Steve Shelley, are currently touring in support of The Best Day, which came out last fall on Matador.
