Father John Misty Shares Epic Spotify Playlist, Performs ‘Mr. Tillman’ on Scandinavian TV (Watch)
With a little bit of a lull in his tour schedule, Father John Misty (aka Josh Tillman) appears to have some time on his hands. In February, he shared “Mr. Tillman,” which we hope is a track off a soon-to-be announced new album. In March, he followed the new song up with a goofy green screen video for people to play with (see examples here and here). And, more recently, he put together an epic 93-song Spotify playlist. It’s a thing of beauty. You can check it out below. (Editor update: this playlist is actually an update to an older playlist that FJM began assembling on Spotify back in 2015).
Father John Misty’s playlist runs the gamut. He’s included old songs and new songs, some with lyrics, some instrumental. He’s drawn a few tunes from movie soundtracks and also included some of his own tracks. We’d expect to find songs by Harry Nilsson, Gavin Bryars, and J.J. Cale, as well as Amy Grant’s “El-Shaddai,” which he’s gushed about on previous occasions. Among the more unexpected inclusions are “Edelweiss” from The Sound of Music, the Bee Gee’s “I Lay Down and Die,” a song by Jim Jarmusch’s band SQÜRL, and the end titles from Starman. Other artists of note include Gillian Welch, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, The Beach Boys, Serge Gainsbourg, and Lee Hazlewood.
To go along with the playlist, FJM selected two images featuring Paul McCartney. One is a photo of Paul and Chris Pine that was taken at the shoot for Paul’s “Queenie Eye” video. The other image shows Paul with gun and it was snapped at the studio when Paul was recording “Oh Woman, Oh Why” in 1971. FJM posted the playlist just after Paul attended the March for Our Lives anti-gun rally in New York, so that’s an interesting coincidence. Also, FJM included one song by The Beatles in his mix, “Strawberry Fields Forever.”
As we await further announcements of new music, feel free to check out FJM performing “Mr. Tillman” on the Scandinavian talk show Skavlan below. Also included are FJM’s upcoming tour dates. His only New York area appearances as of now are festival shows, Mountain Jam and Panorama. You can find tickets for these here and here.
