Fab Moretti’s machinegum Shares Crowd-Sourced, Social Distancing-Appropriate “Kubes” Video (Watch)

Fab Moretti’s machinegum premiered their crowd-sourced video for “Kubes” earlier today on YouTube. Over 80 fans contributed to the project that is now eerily resonant. “Kubes” is the lead track on the art collective’s debut LP, Conduit, which is out on vinyl via French Kiss Records on July 17. You can watch the video below.

The Strokes drummer’s group put out a call for submissions for the Justin Bartha-directed video in February before social distancing was a way of life. They posted a list of instructions on their website for folks to follow and record on their phones. The list included everyday actions such as getting out of bed and brushing your teeth. The band’s goal was to “reproduce universal commonalities and thread a story of harmony between apparent strangers.”

Upon sharing the video, the collective remarked, “Sadly, the idea is more relative now than when first conceived, but hopefully a new perspective can be adopted. Perhaps this video can celebrate the beauty that comes from perseverance, community, and new forms of interactivity.”

The video, which is edited by Cary Lin, cuts together fan submissions with images of band member Ian Devaney. While not its original intention, the video is strikingly poignant. It embodies our current isolation and reliance on technology as a lifeline.

machinegum’s LP Conduit is out now digitally. You can pre-order the limited edition vinyl at the band’s website.

UPDATE May 20: machinegum’s Fab and Ian will be doing an AMA on Reddit on Thursday, May 21 at 3pm ET/12pm PT. You can ask them questions at r/music.
