As part of the Whitney Museum of Art’s Covid-19-era Whitney Screens series, the museum presents National Anthem by Japanese-German American artist Kota Ezawa. National Anthem is a timely selection as the animation depicts NFL football players taking a knee during “The Star-Spangled Banner.” In 2016, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick introduced the practice of kneeling to protest police violence against unarmed Black men. His action got him blackballed from the NFL. But the times they are a-changing. Last month, the NFL apologized for not supporting the protests.
Other films that have streamed in the Whitney Screens series include Alex Da Corte’s Rubber Pencil (2018), Clarissa Tossin’s Ch’u Mayaa (2017), and Korakrit Arunanondchai’s Painting With History In A Room Filled With People With Funny Names 3 (2015).
The Whitney’s screening will present National Anthem in its entirety. The live-stream will remain on Vimeo until Sunday, July 5 at 10 pm EDT.
