In observance of Juneteenth, Metro Pictures presents a special single-screen version of a monumental video work by Isaac Julien, Lessons of the Hour. Julien’s captivating project explores the achievements of American social reformer and abolitionist Frederick Douglass and is informed by Douglass’ speeches, including “Lesson of the Hour,” “What to the Slave Is the 4th of July?,” and “Lecture on Pictures.” Available to stream for a limited time on Metro Pictures’ Vimeo, the presentation is part of the gallery’s ongoing online film festival and also corresponds with Art Basel OVR.
