The weekend is calling and it’s saying you should get up and enjoy some of the culture this city has to offer. The a politically themed film series at BAM and the Museum of the Image continue this weekend, or you find other ideas below. In the mix is a free show by Jon Batiste and Stay Human at the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival, the inaugural Ozy Fusion Fest in Central Park, free concerts by the beach, and more. FILM: T-Rex
In conjunction with its newest exhibition, Who Shot Sports: A Photographic History, 1843 to the Present, the Brooklyn Museum presents a screening of Zackary Canepari and Drea Cooper’s documentary T-Rex. The film profiles Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, the first woman from the United States to win a boxing gold medal at the Olympics. There will be a post-screening discussion with producer Sue Jay Johnson; Jason Crutchfield, Claressa’s coach; and pro boxers Alicia “Slick” Ashley and Heather Hardy.

BOOKS: Modern Lovers: Emma Straub in Conversation with Stuart Nadler
Authors Emma Straub and 5 Under 35 National Book Foundation award winner Stuart Nadler convene at McNally Jackson to discuss their latest novels. Straub is out promoting her coming of age tale Modern Lovers, while Nadler’s new book, The Inseparables, examines three generations of women dealing with challenging life passages.

ART: Susannah Ray: Right Coast Artist Opening and Book Signing
Rockaway Beach Surf Club plays host to a photography exhibit by local Rockaway resident Susannah Ray. The show is based on her new book, Right Coast, which chronicles surfing culture in New York City and was completed just prior to Hurricane Sandy. Ray will be present for the opening reception and will be available to sign books.

FOOD: Ice Cream Sandwich Social
It’s a make-your-own ice cream sandwich party at Flux Factory. Deli-sliced ice cream will be provided along with some items to sandwich them like cookies, brownies and graham crackers. Guests are encouraged to bring add ons or toppings like jam, bacon, whip cream, etc to this potluck affair. A dance party with DJ Marty McSorley ensues following the ice cream merriment. Booze will be available but you can also BYO.

MUSIC: BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival: Jon Batiste and Stay Human & Friends
Internationally renowned mulit-instrumentalist, and Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s band leader Jon Batiste comes to Prospect to play a free show with his musical co-horts Stay Human. Batiste and gang are known for their lively and engaging live shows, so expect the joint to be jumping to their brand of New Orleans-fashioned electric jazz.

FILM: Thank You for Being Honest: The Films of Ira Sachs – Forty Shades of Blue
MoMA hosts a mid-career retrospective of Ira Sachs, a gifted indie director known for his refreshing approach to tackling stories of intimacy on film. The series opens with his Sundance Film Festival 2005 U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize winner Forty Shades of Blue, which is the story of an aging rock ‘n’ roll legend (Rip Torn) and his much younger Russian girlfrend (Dina Korzun). Sachs will be present for a Q&A following the film. Thank for Being Honest runs through August 3.

FILM: Rooftop Films: Don Juan
IDFA teamed up with Rooftop Films for three screening events. The first was Sonita at Socrates Sculpture Park on Wednesday, then a program of shorts on Thursday, and lastly this screening of Jerzy Sladkowski’s award winning documentary Don Juan. Sladkowski will be on hand for a Q&A following the film which is about a 22-year old Russian autistic man name Oleg. Barmaljova perform before the screening and a Stella Artois-sponsored after party follows.

FESTIVAL: Ozy Fusion Fest
Forget that thing going on at Randall’s Island this weekend, the future of festivals is here, and its called Ozy Fusion Fest. A day-long event, this spectacle marries art, food, comedy, music, politics, philosophical debate and more. It takes place at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park and features some of the most intriguing people of our time including Malcolm Gladwell, Karl Rove, Cory Booker, Chef Alex Guarnaschelli, Wyclef Jean, will.i.am, Judy Smith, Kazuhiro Tsuji, and Abbi Jacobson,+ Ilana Glazer (Broad City).

ART + MUSIC: From Forest Hills: Birthplace of Punk to Rock Rock Rockaway Beach
The Queens Museum is hosting a tour through Forest Hills, Queens, which they describe as “the land of musicians, degenerates and dentists.” With Levy’s Unique New York at the helm, tour goers will learn all about the beginnings of the Ramones. The tour concludes with a free concert at Rockaway beach featuring Sick Feeling and art punk rockers Unstoppable Death Machine. The tour and show are part of a series presented by Trans-Pecos in collaboration with the Queens Museum for Queens International 2016.

MUSIC: GØGGS, Babes, Monograms
Musical wonderkid Ty Segall is back in town, this time to perform with his latest side project GØGGS. The group finds him teaming up with Chris Shaw (Ex-Cults) and Charles Moothart, to play a weird and wonderful strain of punk rock. The band play two shows in the New York City area, Friday night at Rough Trade with Surfbort and Cheena, and this show at Baby’s All Right with New Orleans-born punk/swamp/rock group Babes and Brooklyn garage rockers Monograms.
