The Culture File for August 5-7 (NYC Weekend Edition): Summer Streets, Seinfeld Celebration, Martin Creed Closing & More
The weekend is here again, and if you’re in the city and not sure what to do, we’ve assembled some options. Summer Streets is back on Saturday to turn Park Avenue and Lafayette Street into a car-free zone from 7am-1pm. The festivities include a zip line, water slide and more. You can get the lowdown over here. Variance, a music and arts festival that celebrates discovery, diversity, and sustainability, comes to Brooklyn this Saturday. The day-into-evening, solar-powered affair features sets by Oberhofer, Roy Davis Jr., Awesome Tapes From Africa and more. For those that like their cider, Ciderfeast is happening at SolarOne. A restoration of John Water’s Multiple Maniacs comes to the big screen. And, Martin Creed’s show at Park Avenue Armory sadly comes to a close this weekend – don’t snooze on this one. SPORTS: Rio Remotely Opening Ceremony Party with Lolo Jones

Worlds Fair Nano
Get a taste of the future at this two-day technology and arts festival. On tap are interactive exhibits, live art, futurist talks, spontaneous performances, music, food, and more. Highlights include puppy mindreading, a virtual motorcycle ride, talks on topics such as the future of dating and music, and an interactive light show. Plus, you can sample Soylent and foods made with cricket flour. They will have regular food too.

SPORTS: Rockaway Water Park Grand Opening
As if Rockaway needed another reason to be a cool summer destination, this weekend a water park is opening in the hood. The owner of Thai Rock is bringing a Tarzan Boat to the bay. These boats are essentially a floating jungle gym with diving platforms, trampolines, a slide and a swinging rope. The thing looks totally dope. You can watch a video of it in action here. It will be free to play on during a portion of opening day.

PARTY: Le Cheboigon Opening

FESTIVAL: Lincoln Center Out of Doors: The Last Waltz 40th Anniversary Celebration
As part of Lincoln Center Out of Doors’ Americanafest NYC, the festival is celebrating the 40th anniversary The Last Waltz, a concert that was billed as The Band’s “farewell concert appearance”. It took place at the Winterland Ballroom and found the group joined by an all-star cast of guests including Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and many more. Martin Scorsese also documented the event and turned into a documentary. Lincoln Center Out of Doors seeks to re-create the musical vibe of that special night and finds the late Levon Helm’s band The Midnight Ramble performing with special guests Bob Weir, Dr. John, Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller, Anderson East, Howard Johnson, and more. Parker Millsap open the evening.
