Eric André Playing LA’s Lodge Room as BLARF, Releasing Album
The details are a little sketchy on this. But, it appears Eric André is resurrecting his music moniker BLARF. A post appeared today on both Eric and Stone Throw’s social media accounts that BLARF is releasing an album on June 26 and performing at Los Angeles’s Lodge Room on July 6. Tickets for the all-ages show are on sale now.
Back in 2012, Eric spoke about the origins of BLARF with Jeff Weiss for LA Weekly. Formed while he was attending the Berklee School of Music, Eric was looking to produce “out there” music that might resemble the bastard child of Frank Zappa and the Beastie Boys. The group ran into some moral issues and disbanded.
Flash-forward to 2014, Eric teams up with the First Seed (aka Adam Gabber, aka Adam Gabourie) on a record, which they release on Christmas. They appear to call themselves BLARF and share four demented and glorious industrial rap tunes. The songs include “iSteal,” “Who I Am,” “Wickedpedia” and “Beef Patty”. The album artwork is choice. Created by musician and DJ Kyle Mabson aka @selfies_food_and_pets, it features girls scantily dressed in confederate flag garb superimposed over a Jewish cemetery. Layered on this image is a photo/illustration of a decapitated Eric playing a tiny saxophone.
What is the meaning of this new BLARF? Eric suggests coming to the show to find out. It’s presented by Peanut Butter Wolf’s Stones Throw, a label that reps Mndsgn., Jerry Paper, Benny Sings, among many others.
Tickets for BLARF at the Lodge Room are available here.
UPDATE: It appears Pitchfork was able to speak with BLARF (perhaps over email? we want the receipts!). When asked if they were Eric, they responded: “Who the fuck is that?” So, has Pitchfork cracked the case? We still think BLARF and Eric are one and the same. Why would Eric encourage and include links to buy tickets to the show on his social media if it was just some artist stealing his band name?
