After You Vote, Parties, Screenings & Other Things to Do on Election Day in New York City

It’s finally here America, it’s Election Day. Today, we go to the polls to cast our ballot for Hillary Clinton or Donald J. Trump, ending one of the wildest elections in the history of our country. Some may want to mark the occasion in a special way or some just don’t want to be alone as the results come in. If you fall in either of these camps, we assembled some activities and events that you may want to engage in, such as attending a comedy show at the UCB, grabbing a beer at a Bushwick bar showing Stephen Colbert’s election night special for Showtime, or catching a movie at Brooklyn’s newest movie theater. Check out our suggestions below and don’t forget to vote.

Hillary for America Election Night Event
Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, 655 W 34th St New York, New York 10001
6pm
Tickets distributed at Hillary Offices or email
We don’t want to play favorites, but if you’re a Hillary supporter this is the pretty much the party you need to be at on election night. Hillary and Tim Kaine are both expected to be attendance, and, if you can’t make it into the Javits Center, there is supposed to be a block party on 11th Avenue outside of the Javits with screens broadcasting what’s going on inside. If you’re a Trump supporter, he’s also having a party in New York City that he’ll show for, but not surprisingly, it’s a more tight-lipped affair. If you want to try to crash, we hear it’s going down at the New York Hilton Midtown.

Perhaps you’ve contemplated skipping the country if the election doesn’t turn out the way you want it to. If France is on your shortlist of countries to live, or even just visit, then cozying up with some French people at their New York City cultural center might be a place to consider sitting out the election results. The French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) is celebrating the big day with two screenings of Stanley Kubrick’s satirical masterpiece Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964), at 4pm and 7:30pm. The earlier screening is followed by a reception with wine and beer, while the 7:30pm is followed by a results viewing party in FIAF’s adjacent Tinker Auditorium. Also, keep in mind, France was also split on who to support with President Francois Hollande endorsing Hillary and France’s far-right National Front party leader Marine Le Pen preferring Trump.

Wondering where that Trump Zoltar Machine that was popping up around town back has been hiding? It’s part of an exhibit curated by Alfred Steiner at Joshua Liner Gallery along with the Donald Trump tombstone and other US presidential election-themed artworks. The show exhibit is a riff on JG Ballard’s 1967 essay “Why I Want to Fuck Ronald Reagan”. Election day seems like a good time to pay it a visit, but if you can’t make it over, the show is on view through November 12.
