Courtney Barnett Played Soundcheck and Bowery Ballroom (Pics & Video)
Aussie indie rocker Courtney Barnett is in New York City this week to play a few shows in support of her critically lauded debut LP, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit. We had the pleasure of seeing her perform twice on Wednesday. She did a live Soundcheck session at The Green Space in the afternoon and then performed her second of three shows at Bowery Ballroom in the evening. It was quite a day for Barnett, who, according to her Facebook page, also went to the taping of the final Late Show with David Letterman.
For the intimate Soundcheck session, Barnett played a short set and did a brief Q&A with host John Schaefer. During a previous New York visit, Barnett had given Schaefer a tea towel with her drawings on it, which he still had in his possession and proudly displayed. It appears that Barnett attended art school and is a talented illustrator. She actually does all of her own album art. You can watch a video of the session below and the podcast will be up next week.
Her Bowery Ballroom show was a much more raucous affair. It kicked off with a small hiccup, there were no setlists on stage, but all was straightened by the third song. Barnett did a little stage banter, and launched into a Stairway to Heaven riff as a joke, but mostly she stuck to her musical script which included her new and old material, as well as a covers of the Breeders’ Cannonball and The Lemonheads’ Being Around. Barnett is just getting better with age. If you missed her this time around, she’ll be back July 22 to play Terminal 5 with Speedy Ortiz and Torres.
Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit is out now via Mom + Pop. Photos from both shows can be seen above.
