Capsule Film Review: The Red Chapel
You’d probably think it’d be difficult to fool the North Koreans, but journalist-turned-filmmaker Mads Brügger makes it look easy in his Sundance Award-winning documentary. Pretending to be a comedy troupe group called The Red Chapel, Brügger and two Korean-born Danish comedians, Jacob, who suffers from cerebral palsy, and Simon, travel to North Korea to perform in Pyongyang. Under the constant supervision of their guide Ms. Pak, the trio tour the city, are outfitted in regime garb and partake in an anti-American rally. Teetering in that uneasy Sacha Baron Cohen territory, the resulting documentary is a bit of a mind screw.
The Red Chapel is a Kino Lorber release.
