Beach House Shares “Sparks”
We aren’t sure if it’s the impending Fourth of July weekend, but there are certainly some explosive tracks hitting the airways. We were barely through are our twentieth listen of Prince’s fire-breathing “HARDROCKLOVER”, when Beach House’s “Sparks” started flying across the mediaverse. The Baltimore duo’s first single off Depression Cherry premiered earlier today on SiriusXM’s SiriusXMU channel. Come midnight EDT/9pm PDT it will be an instant download for anyone who pre-orders the new album via the Sub Pop Mega Mart, iTunes, and Amazon.
Clocking in at over five minutes, the song is constructed around a reedy keyboard chord progression. The band spoke to NPR and dissected how it came together. One of the most interesting components is the enchanting vocal loop that opens the song and remains throughout. It was born by accident during their soundcheck in Bristol, England. The duo were so taken by it, they recorded it on their iPhones. Now it’s a key element of “Sparks”, a track that leaves you in a beautiful clearing after bathing you in a sea of chaos.
Depression Cherry, which will be packaged in a sumptuous red velvet sleeve, was produced by the band (Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally) along with Chris Coady at Studio in the Country in Bogalusa, Louisiana. The album drops August 28 via Sub Pop in the North America, Bella Union in Europe, and Mistletone in Australia and New Zealand. Prior to the release, the band will be setting out on tour. Their first stop is Portland, ME on August 18. A New York City date hasn’t been announced yet.
