Bands to See This Weekend at Northside Festival 2016
Last night found Steve Gunn, Wolf Parade, DIIV and many other artists taking to stages all over North Brooklyn to help kick off the music portion of Northside Festival 2016. As we roll into the weekend, we’d like to offer up our music picks for the remainder of festival, which runs through Sunday. Below you’ll find 11 bands/shows that should be on your hit list.
Friday, June 10
Colleen Green
at Baby’s All Right
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Colleen Green’s latest output is a s/t 6-song EP that finds the musician blending her indie pop sensibilities with the classic punk rock goodness of the Ramones. You can get a sampling below. Her appearance at Northside comes amid an extensive North American tour. If you miss her this time around, she’s back on June 27 to play Alphaville with Cassie Ramone.
JEFF the Brotherhood
at Music Hall of Williamsburg
After a horrible split with Warner Bros., Nashville’s JEFF the Brotherhood are happy to be left to their own devices. They released the psychedelically inclined LP Global Chakra Rhythms in November and are currently touring in support. Check out the video for track Radiating Fiber Plane below.
The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die
at Palisades
Get lost in the atmospheric emo rock of 8-piece band The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die. They make a pass through Brooklyn this weekend in support of Long Live Happy Birthday out now via Topshelf Records. Check out “Even More Forever” off the new album below.
Jack + Eliza
at Shea Stadium
The harmonies are strong with this NY duo. Jack + Eliza released their debut LP Gentle Warnings last summer on Yebo Music. Still of college age (Jack attends NYU, while Eliza is at Columbia), the duo produce stripped down indie psych pop rock that’s very easy on the ears. Saturday, June 11
Savak
at Union Pool
Savak is a NYC punk supergroup that is comprised of members of The Obits, Holy Fuck, Nation of Ulysses, and The Cops. The band’s influences range from ’60s Texas psychedelia to British pub rock to early-’80s American hardcore. They recently released their debut LP, Best Of Luck In Future Endeavors, get a sampling below.
Conor Oberst
at McCarren Park
We’re excited that folk troubadour Conor Oberst is feeling well enough to perform again following the cancellation of the Desaparecidos tour this past October. His last solo album was Upside Down Mountain, which came out in 2014. We aren’t sure if he’ll be revealing new material when he plays McCarren Park on Saturday, but chances are, he’ll revisit songs like “Zigzagging Toward the Light”, which you can find below. Also on the bill Kacey Musgraves and openers The Felice Brothers.
King Khan & The Shrines
at Brooklyn Bowl
Although King Khan & The Shrines has toned it down in recent years, the garage rockers is still known for putting on entertaining live shows. Earlier this month, King Khan released a 7” filled with songs inspired by The Invaders, a militant civil rights group from Memphis, Tennessee. Check out one of the tracks below, “Children of the World”.
The Gotobeds
at Knitting Factory
Pittsburgh post-punks The Gotobeds appear at Northside Festival fresh off the release of their thrilling sophomore LP Blood // Sugar // Secs // Traffic, out today on Sub Pop.Protomartyr’s Joe Casey has described the quartet’s live show as being like “all night party where I feared for my life and the lives of everybody in the five block radius.” Get an earful of infectious album track “Bodies” below.
Sunday, June 12
Omni
at Lyft Stage at Williamsburg Walks
Omni is an Atlanta trio made up of former members of Deerhunter and Carnivores. The group are set to release their debut LP Deluxe on July 8 via Trouble in Mind. Their sound hints an appreciation for post-punk of the late 70’s and early 80’s, think Television and Devo. After the album drops they will be heading out on extensive North American tour that, if you miss them at Northside, has them returning to play Shea Stadium and Mercury Lounge late August. Brian Wilson/ROSTAM/HINDS
at McCarren Park
Does the Beach Boy really need an introduction? He’ll be playing Pet Sounds. Also on the bill former Vampire Weekend bandmate Rostam Batmanglij’s new project ROSTAM, and Madrid indie rockers HINDS.
TEEN
at Sunnyvale
TEEN have been owning 2016. In February the quartet released their new LP Love Yes on Carpark Records and embarked on an extensive North American tour. Before they head out with Wye Oak to play even more shows, Teeny Lieberson and gang bring their potent brand of electric dream pop to Northside Festival.
