Must-See Art Happenings This Week in NYC: NY Art Book Fair, BOS, Pope.L, Batman Day! & More


It’s another week in September and with it come more art-infused events. In New York City, this weekend is dominated by book fairs, both small and large. You can also catch a crawl across downtown Manhattan, weave in and out of artists studios in Brooklyn, or take part in a climate change-themed fest up in the Bronx. Read on for all of our recommendations for a culturally enriched weekend.

The NY Art Book Fair

Printed Matter’s free multi-day market celebrating the intersection of art and books is back at MoMA PS1 for another year. The 2019 edition brings together artist’s books, catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines from over 365 international presses, booksellers, artists, and indie publishers from more than 30 countries. Highlights include Michael Stipe discussing his new book Our Interference Times with Douglas Coupland, Gagosian Gallery’s installation around Taryn Simon’s 2016 performance An Occupation of Loss, a keynote address by “Black Dada” artist Adam Pendleton, and the launches of Olaf Breuning’s Faces, Petra Collins’s OMG! I’m being killed, and Bomb Magazine’s BOMB 149.

Alex Da Corte: Marigolds

Fresh off his inclusion in the Ralph Rugoff-curated May You Live in Interesting Times at the 2019 Venice Biennial, New Jersey-born conceptual artist Alex Da Corte is the subject of Marigolds, a new show at KARMA. He typically creates immersive large-scale installations that include wall-based works, sculptures, and videos.

Public Art Fund Talks: Pope.L

Pope.L is having a moment. Over the next few months, the visual artist will be mounting a trifecta of projects with the Public Art Fund, the Whitney Museum, and The Museum of Modern Art. The Public Art Fund work, Conquest, takes place on Saturday, September 21, and is considered the artist’s largest performance to date. It finds 140 people crawling over five hours in a relay on the sidewalks of downtown Manhattan. In lead up to this crawling flash-mob, Pope.L is doing this free talk hosted by Public Art Fund.

With support by Public Art Fund, artist Pope.L orchestrates this 140-person-relay crawl across downtown Manhattan. It ends at Union Square around 3pm. Conquest is part of Pope.L: Instigation, Aspiration, Perspiration, which is the title of a concept that comprises a trio of complementary exhibitions: Conquest, Choir, and member, organized by Public Art Fund, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and The Museum of Modern Art.

Batman Day!

Holy octogenarian! The Society of Illustrators celebrates 80 years of Batman at this day-long fête. Stop in to see Dark-Knight-themed exhibits Illustrating Batman: Eighty Years of Comics and Pop Culture, Batman Collected: Chip Kidd’s Batman Obsession, Bat-Manga!: The Secret History of Batman in Japan, and Batman Black and White: Sketch Covers Selected by Chip Kidd. Plus, the Society of Illustrators is participating in Museum Day, which means you can score free admission. Go here for more details. Art events NYC September 2019 KraftwerkKraftwerk: Dance Forever

at Mast Books, 72 Avenue A, New York, NY 10009
Opening reception: Saturday, September 21, 6pm-10pm
Mast Books and Cultural Traffic present this exhibition that documents Kraftwerk’s aesthetic output from the early 1970s to present. It features promotional material, sheet music, obsolete recorded media, posters, photos and musical toys from the German electronic musicians. The opening reception is hosted by Ava Berlin DJ Aiden T.

The New Museum is behind this free public festival that features conversations, artist talks, performances and activations themed around the effects of climate change faces by communities in the Bronx. Among the artists taking part are Teddy Cruz and Fonna Forman, Jon Gray of Ghetto Gastro, Xaviera Simmons, Oscar Oliver-Didier, Coco June and more.

Independent Art Book Fair

Dedicated to the spirit of independent publishing, the Independent Art Book Fair returns for its 4th year. Over 60 exhibitors will be camped out at this two-day event in the heart of Williamsburg.
