Adam Green Subject of Morrison Hotel Photo Exhibit, ‘Engine of Paradise’ Tour Launches Next Month

Adam Green is sprouting up all over the place. The musician-cum-filmmaker-cum-artist-cum-poet dropped an LP, graphic novel, and music video earlier this month. He was also featured in The Hole’s Meet Me In The Bathroom: The Art Show, which closed yesterday. But it turns out, all that was just Green fertilizing the soil. Next up, he’s the subject of Guy Eppel’s photography exhibit opening this week at the Morrison Hotel Gallery. And come October, he’ll be hobnobbing with fans.  He has a book signing scheduled in Brooklyn and then he heads out on a European tour. Suffice it to say, everything is coming up Green this fall.

Adam Green War Paradise Graphic NovelFather John Misty, who collaborated with Green on a music video, was onto something when he called Green “our [Alejandro] Jodorowsky.” Similar to the Chilean-French artist, Green has branched out into graphic novels. His inaugural 152-page saga, War and Paradise, is out now via Pioneer Works. A satirical war epic with a medieval flare, the eye-popping comic depicts a clash between humans and machines while also exploring the bidirectional relationship between life and the afterlife. Green worked with his tech-savvy wife Yasmin on the story and enlisted Toby Goodshank and Tom Bayne to help with the psychedelic illustrations. The novel can be downloaded as a free PDF here or a physical copy is available for purchase here. Green, along with Goodshank and Bayne, will be at Desert Island Comics in Brooklyn on Thursday, October 10th at 7pm for a Q&A and book signing.

Green’s affable new LP, Engine of Paradise, was conceived as a soundtrack to the graphic novel. The former Moldy Peach’s 10th solo record finds the musician returning to the baroque-pop stylings of his early 2000s albums, Gemstones and Friends of Mine. Produced by Florence + The Machine drummer Loren Humphrey, Engine of Paradise features beautiful and intricate string arrangements by Jesse Kotansky and a cameo by Florence Welch on “Cheating on a Stranger.” Back in May when the project was announced, Green shared a video for album track “Freeze My Love.” With the records release, he shared a trippy video for the title song “Engine of Paradise.” You can watch it below. Engine of Paradise is out now via Danger Mouse’s 30th Century Records.

Inspired by his recent musical output, Green is the subject of Guy Eppel’s upcoming photography exhibit at Morrison Hotel Gallery. Honor by Honest He Fell Down Upon Us: Adam Green, the Minor Love Years features photographs of Green around the release of his album Minor Love, for which Eppel shot the cover. Of Green, Eppel explained:

“In life there are normally only a sprinkling of subjects who stop you in your tracks. To make you think, this person is one of a kind & spending time with them and photographing them to form a narrative is a treat. No, that’s too much of an undersell, it’s an honor. Adam Green is one of those artists. He’s not just a musician. He is a special individual that, when in his presence, you become included in his artistic endeavors to full level immersion. Without even meaning it every time I point my camera at him he emanates that coolness that just comes naturally to some and can’t be taught.”

Prior to the release of Green’s Minor Love in 2009, Eppel and the artist became fast friends, and the photographer began capturing Green’s daily life. Eppel shot images for the album’s cover and documented Green’s subsequent tours, beginning with one supporting The Cribs. The images in the exhibit span July 2009 to February 2010.

Morrison Hotel Gallery is launching Eppel’s exhibit with a shindig on Thursday, September 26 at 7pm. Sailor Jerry is providing the beverages. Morrison Hotel is located at 116 Prince Street, 2nd Floor, New York, NY 10012.

Green also has a European tour on the horizon with Jackie Cohen of Foxygen opening. The musician’s record release show at Rough Trade earlier this month was a hoot. The joyous event found a wide-eyed Green breaking out his signature dance moves while performing a mix of old and new songs. If you can, we highly recommend catching him live. Green’s tour dates are below.
