Guy Maddin Delivers Social Distancing Treat, Stream ‘The Green Fog’ Free Online
Guy Maddin has bestowed a “social distancing treat” to film fans far and wide as we cope with the Coronavirus. The Canadian filmmaker has made his found footage Vertigo remake, The Green Fog, free for all to stream on Vimeo. He broke the good news via Instagram.
The Green Fog appears to be suited for disasters. Balcony Booking released the film in New York City theaters in January 2018 amid a bomb cyclone.
Made in collaboration with brothers Evan and Galen Johnson, the San Francisco International Film Festival commissioned the project to close out its 60th edition. Constructed of footage from films and TV shows shot in and around the Bay area, the film features clips from The Streets of San Francisco, McMillan & Wife, Jagged Edge, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and Dirty Harry, just to name a few. The filmmakers found that the footage lent itself to a retelling of Vertigo, so they used Hitchcock’s tale of erotic obsession as a narrative thread.
Fans of Christian Marclay’s The Clock, are sure to dig Maddin’s masterpiece. Note, The Green Fog is considerably shorter than The Clock. It’s just a hair over an hour.
