Alex Ross Perry Delivers Luminous 7-Minute Short for Soccer Mommy’s ‘yellow is the color of her eyes’
Alex Ross Perry is becoming a master of the music video. The Her Smell filmmaker’s latest contribution to the art form is a radiant 7-minute movie for a new song by Soccer Mommy, “yellow is the color of her eyes.” You can check out the transfixing visual below. Soccer Mommy shared the video along with details of her 2020 tour. Perry is currently doing a final promotional push for Her Smell.
Five years ago, we probably wouldn’t have pegged Perry as a music video director. His early films, including Listen Up Philip, Queen of Earth and The Color Wheel, are all dialogue-driven, unnerving dramas. But now that he’s jumped in, his cinematic sensibility translates well. Besides Soccer Mommy, he’s directed videos for Sleigh Bells, Aly & AJ and Vivian Girls.
Perry also took audiences on a haunting rock ’n’ roller coaster ride with his audacious Her Smell, which came out earlier this. Structured in five acts, the film finds Elisabeth Moss cast as Becky Something, a punk rock star whose life is in free fall.
The screenplay for Her Smell recently became available for download over at The Playlist. To coincide with the script release, he did an interview with the website. Also, Perry will be at the Museum of Modern Art in New York on Wednesday, November 20 for Q&A following a screening of Her Smell. The event is part of the museum’s The Contenders 2019 series. For more information, visit the museum’s website.
As for Perry’s collaboration with Soccer Mommy (AKA Sophie Allison), the video for “yellow is the color of her eyes,” which is shot on Super 16mm, uses color-coded design similarly to Her Smell. Perry drew inspiration from Breaking the Waves and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and later realized Inception was also in the mix. The filmmaker remarked, “It wasn’t until we got the footage back that I realized a dash of first-scene-of-Inception had snuck in there.” You can also see that the editing in the video is like Perry’s films. He employs a lot of eerie dissolves reminiscent of films from the sixties and seventies.
“yellow is the color of her eyes” is an exquisite sonic odyssey about Allison’s feeling of losing time, especially with her mom, because of her grueling tour schedule. The video features Allison starring into the camera as she wanders around Playland in Rye, New York.
This is the second new song shared by the Nashville singer-songwriter since her 2018 breakout album Clean. She released “lucy” earlier this year. Both show that Allison is stepping things up in terms of production and instrumentation. “yellow is the color of her eyes” features Mary Lattimore on harp.
Allison has also announced a monstrous 2020 tour that kicks off in March. She’ll be crossing North America and then onto Europe. The tour includes a show at Brooklyn Steel on April 3, 2020. For tickets, there is a Seated pre-sale that begins Wednesday, November 20 at 10am local time. Go here to sign-up. Otherwise, all shows go on sale to the general public on Friday, November 22 at 10am local time.
