The 2019 fall art season has officially begun in New York City, which means openings and art happenings are coming on fast and furious. We’ve done our due diligence and put together a list of events and exhibits we recommend checking out this week. You’ll find Gus Van Sant’s first solo art show in New York City, the opening of Photoville, a warm-up to JR’s show at the Brooklyn Museum, a Japanese infused exhibit at Jeffrey Deitch and more.

Tuesday, September 10

Kader Attia, Reflecting Memory, 2016

Kader Attia conceived this show as a continuation of his recent exhibit at the Hayward Gallery in London, The Museum of Emotion. Through video, sculpture, drawings and an installation of large-scale glass works the French-Algerian artist explores the notion of invisible repair as it relates to coping with ghosts from contemporary history such as slavery, colonialism and genocide. Included in the show is Attia’s 2016 Marcel Duchamp Prize winning film, Reflecting Memory (2016; 46 minutes).

Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant gets his first solo art show in New York City. On display will be a series of large-scale watercolors on stretched linen inspired by his hometown, Los Angeles.

JR, the artist who last spring imagined the pyramid at the Louvre continued underground, is poised to be the star of New York City’s fall art season. This show at Galerie Perrotin opens a few weeks ahead of the Brooklyn Museum’s JR: Chronicles, the French artist’s largest solo museum exhibition to date. Working in conversation with the Brooklyn Museum exhibit, JR: The Chronicles of New York City – Sketches features excerpts from a photographic mural the artist is creating for the larger show. Also on display at Perrotin will be annotations and cut-outs that illustrate his process, as well as a new documentary film.

It’s back! The photo pop-up fest produced by United Photo Industries returns for 8th year. Camping out in Brooklyn Bridge Plaza, the 2019 edition of Photoville brings together over 80 photo exhibits housed in and around shipping containers. In addition to a heck of a lot of photography, the event also features talks, photo walks, nightly projection shows, Tintype portrait sessions, workshops and more.

Part of the 2019 Crossing the Line Festival, Pierre Huyghe investigates the nature of ritual with his video installation The Host and the Cloud, 2009-2010. The French artist filmed three separate days, the Day of the Dead, Valentine’s Day and May Day at a former ethnographic museum outside of Paris. In the film, a group of people circulate through the museum’s galleries and come in contact with external influences. Please note, it’s for mature audiences only.
