Guillaume Canet, Mathieu Amalric Are on a Synchronized Swimming Team in Teaser for ‘Sink or Swim’ (Watch)
Please, someone, distribute this film in the U.S.. Premiering at last month’s Cannes Film Festival, Sink or Swim (Le Grand Bain) is directed by Gilles Lellouche and stars Guillaume Canet, Mathieu Amalric, and Benoit Poelvoorde as members of an all-male synchronized swimming team. Watch an excerpt below. Sink or Swim will be released theatrically in France in October and in Germany in early 2019, but has yet to secure U.S. distribution.
Drawing comparison to The Full Monty, Lellouche’s comedy is about a group of troubled middle-aged men who find renewed purpose in life through forming their local pool’s first ever synchronized swimming team for men. Besides Canet, Amarlic, and Poelvoorde, the film also stars Jean-Hugues Anglade as an aging rocker, and Virginie Efira as the team’s coach. Alain Attal and Hugo Sélignac served as producers.
Lellouche enlisted Jon Brion to do the music for the film, which was a huge coup. Brion is one of our favorite film composers. His credits include Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Charlie Kaufman’s Synecdoche, New York, Miranda July’s The Future, and Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird.
Let’s cross our fingers that a U.S. distributor scoops up this buddy comedy.
